A North Zulch man is dead following a well explosion in Madison County.
Officials say James Cowan died Monday night after a piece of metal struck him.
According to authorities, Cowan, who was a subcontractor, was relieving pressure from the well when it exploded.
The well, which is located near Harris Tap Road off 1372, has been shut off and is no longer leaking.
The railroad commission is investigating.
Monday night Madison County Sheriff Dan Douget said authorities were at the scene at the time of the explosion trying to shut off the gas leaking from the well.
Residents in that area reported hearing a loud blast, described by some as sounding like a sonic boom.
Sheriff Douget said there was no fire, but some type of gas or fuel was still leaking shortly after the accident.
