Pope Benedict the 16th has accepted the resignation of Galveston-Houston Roman Catholic Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza. The Vatican said Tuesday Fiorenza is resigning after reaching the age of 75, which is the church's mandatory retirement age for bishops. Fiorenza turned 75 on January 31st.
All bishops are required to submit their resignations to the pope when they turn 75; it is then up to the pope to accept or reject the resignation.
Benedict said he was replacing Fiorenza with Monsignor Daniel
DiNardo, who has been the coadjutor bishop in Galveston-Houston.
The archdiocese oversees dioceses in Austin, Tyler, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Victoria and Brownsville.
The Beaumont native previously served as bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Angelo before his appointment as bishop of
the Galveston-Houston diocese. Pope John Paul the Second raised
that diocese to an archdiocese in 2004, with Fiorenza as its archbishop.
