Bryan Aquatic Playground

Kids of all ages splashed into spring break.

The city of Bryan opened its second splash pad Saturday, this one in Tanglewood Park, and it's already getting rave reviews.

"It's really exciting and a lot of fun," one young Bryan resident said.

"I think it's going to be a great way for kids to cool off and just stay cool throughout the summer," Bryan resident and mother of two Mary Vest said. "It's Texas, so we get some good heat here. I think it's going to be a great. It's going to extend our outside activities."

Splash pads are popping up across the country as an alternative to the Jungle Jim of the past.

"We tell people splash pads are the hottest thing going in the park and recreation business right now," KRAFTSMAN Design and Sales Consultant David Ondrias said. "It's the coolest thing you can put in a park."

Aquatic playgrounds are becoming the newest trend for cities because no lifeguards are needed and they can pretty much operate year round.

Besides the constant flow of water, cities are saving money because no staff is needed for operation. Plus the normal 90-day operating period of a city pool is extended. The splash pads can almost be open year round, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the water and relive your childhood.

The splash pad at Tanglewood Park runs on a timer. It's set to operate each day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The pad can be turned on with the touch of the activation pole located near the pad.
