The US Supreme Court is being asked to block tonight's scheduled execution of death row inmate Tommie Hughes of Dallas.
Prosecutors say Hughes was responsible for the 1997 deaths of
Foluke Erinkitola and Roxanne Mendoza after they left a movie. Both were shot during a holdup.
Erinkitola was a University of Illinois student who was in the Dallas area for a summer internship with GTE. Mendoza also worked for GTE.
Hughes was charged with both killings but only tried for Erinkitola's death.
He would be the fifth Texas convicted killer to have his punishment carried out this year.
