There's encouraging news for the people fighting wildfires in Texas.

Firefighters making a 30-hour stand near the Panhandle town of Canadian appear to have won their battle against a blaze that has consumed 450-thousand acres. It's all but out. Their work saved the 80-resident town of Lipscomb.

The National Weather Service says rain could soak the drought-stricken region this weekend and bring further relief.

Texas Governor Rick Perry took an aerial tour yesterday and later said the losses are "staggering." He says he spoke to President Bush yesterday and told him Texas needs federal aid immediately.
