A 21-year-old Houston man on spring break in South Padre Island drowned in the Gulf of Mexico after strong currents swept him from a beach.
Authorities haven't released the man's identity yet.
The Coast Guard says the man was swimming near a resort with a group of people Saturday when he disappeared. Coast Guard Lieutenant Charles Hawkins says the group was having trouble making it out of the water because of strong currents.
A helicopter and two boats searched for the man but without success until his body washed ashore near some condominiums Saturday night.
The National Weather Service says a moderate rip tide current warning was in effect at the time and the area had 25 mile-per-hour winds.
