Robert Salazar Junior is scheduled to die tonight in the Texas death chamber in Huntsville for the 1997 beating death of a two-year-old Lubbock girl.
Salazar says he was baby-sitting Adriana Gomez and had her in the bathtub when he pushed her with the back of his hand to stop her from crying. He says she fell and hit her head on the tub.
But authorities say an enraged Salazar inflicted injuries on his girlfriend's daughter that a pathologist testified were worse than those suffered by traffic accident victims.
Salazar would be the sixth prisoner put to death this year in Texas and the second of four scheduled this month in the nation's busiest capital punishment state.
Next on the execution schedule is Raymond Martinez, who's condemned for the 1983 shooting death of a Houston bar owner during
a robbery. He's to be put to death Tuesday.
