Hurricane Katrina evacuee children from Louisiana now attending Texas public schools scored far worse on a statewide standardized exam than Texas children.

State officials and teachers blame the disparity, in part, on the poor New Orleans school system and the trauma of losing their homes.

About 38,000 Katrina evacuees are enrolled in Texas.
