College Station police say a Milam County man was simply trying to help.

But, Jerry Sowders, 48, of Gause, is in the intensive care unit at the College Station Med after trying to break up a fight.

It happened early Sunday morning outside of a bar connected to Post Oak Mall.

Detectives say Sowders was trying to keep people from fighting, and in the process was knocked out with a single punch.

The back of his head hit the concrete, and his skull was cracked.

His friends say Jerry is a non-violent guy, and that he was even the designated driver.

Police have no suspects in the case.

Sowders friends are trying to plan a benefit because he has no insurance.
