Job Cuts Go Before Navasota School Board

A closed-door meeting is scheduled for Thursday to discuss possible terminations at Navasota ISD.

Superintendent Jennings Teel announced last week that support staff positions will be cut to avoid a deficit in the district.

At the same time, teachers and administrators are expected to receive a three percent raise.

Teel says they are looking to cut between 10 and 15 jobs, which include custodial and clerical positions and instructional aides.

Navasota ISD is not in a financial bind, according to Teel, having a $2.6 million balance. However, Teel says times are tough, and with 70 percent of the district's budget going toward personnel, provisions must be made.

Thursday's meeting is not open the public, however, Teel says Navasota School Board President Hollis Hood will make a statement to the media following the meeting.
