At a Thursday night school board meeting, Navasota school board members began looking at who might lose a job.

"Everything is preliminary right now, we don't really know even that. We think that we know, maybe there might be 8 or 9 or 10 positions that might be affected," said School Board President Hollis Hood.

If those employees lose their jobs, Board President Hollis Hood says it would save the district $245,000.

In a phone interview earlier this week, Superintendent Jennings Teel says there are other cuts.

"The athletic director, he's cut $80,000 to $100,000 of the athletic budget. We're looking at consolidating bus routes which comes to $80,000 to $100,000 here and there."

Although board members have already started trimming, ironically, Hood says the board doesn't know how much it wants to cut from the budget.

"We don't really have that number yet, I guess we could probably get the number but we're not to that point yet," said Hood.

Giving district employees the proposed 3% raise would cost another half a million dollars.

With a $2.6 million fund balance, Teel says the district isn't in a financial bind, just planning ahead.

Hood doesn't agee. "That fund balance is actually less than three months operating expenses," said Hood.

If costs increase after the budget is made, money would be taken from the fund balance, says Hood, which could possibly leave the district in the hole.

The district will iron out more of its budget at a workshop Monday, July 21, at 6:30pm.

"Most of the football players can't read." Ya, I'm sure that's true. After reading all this stuff the last few weeks, I am starting to understand why Navasota has struggled at times with their TAKS scores. The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.

I was recently told about this website, and I can't believe some of the things people think. How can anyone borrow 25 million dollars and not be in financial straits when they are forced to take a pay cut. This is basicly what happened. The Navasota taxpayers passed a bond, the state cut funding, tax rates maxed out, the bugdet has to be cut. Yes, the bond money has to be spent on it's designated purpose, but it also has to be repaid, therefore a financial crises.

Bonds voter approved $25 million. Amount spent $31 million. Result-Budget problems.

Most of the football players that play on the new field can't even read. its sad that nisd cheats these kids out of an education. How many kids become pro football players 1 out of 20,000, maybe!!! I had a student tell me she watched movies(Finding Nemo)her last semester of senior year, no work at all!!! We have high school teachers who act 16, and a school board thats clueless!!! TEA please step in and clean this mess up!!!

Some have brought up the bond for the football field and the P-Ville school....I voted NO both times to both issues. I agree the old stadium was in need of an upgrade but I feel we should have been voting for another High or Junior High SCHOOL in NAVASOTA instead of this huge stadium and a school in the small town of P-ville/Stoneham. I didn't see the need for that school at this time, nor the stadium when we have more problems that need to be addressed at the jr. high and high school levels.

Well part of the problem is the local economy.A lot of people have to work in Houston or College Station just to get paid a decent wage.Plus with only 1 real grocery store they buy grocerys in College Station so they can save money .Sad but true we have become a true bedroom community. We have nothing in downtown to attract anything but antique shoppers and from what I have seen that is hit or miss. The handful of people in town with money certainly don't shop there and will not put any money in the buildings they own.So we have a lot of issues to deal with and it won't change until we clean house with the city manager ,mayor and the entine city council.

TEA loves this place. If navasota was not so poor it would have a private school.

A game before a education. Welfare before work. This is Navasota.

After the game we can get HUD forms and the lone star card.

All ISD's in the great State of Texas are being hard hit, and it begins with the price of gas & diesel. The state legislature will have to make some decisions regarding funding for education in TX. However, the citizens need to hold the legislature's feet to the fire, all of us are tightening our belts. This is now, and has been a state-wide issue, and the TX legislature has avoided it, remember last time ?? I would encourage the average citizen get involved in the next legislative session, and make them accountable, remove them, if they fail to come to and/or stay in session, or run away ! The next session legislative session will make or break many school districts.

Lets quit talking down about Navasota it is just gonna make our school look bad when we go and compete with other schools. Lets Go Rattlers and we will make up for our stadium when football season comes and we go to state

Stadium Lover, yes there was an approved bond but what about the $6 million cost over run that was covered by non voter approved maintenance bonds & general funds?

Posted by: Stadium Lover Location: Navasota on Jul 19, 2008 at 08:24 PM
YES, the Stadium does look great, and I am proud and so very happy to attend functions in it. Graduation Ceremony in May was the BEST NISD has had in a very long time, and it was due in part to the location, and design of the stadium. The stadium is not in any way the reason for deficit. It was funded by the School Bond that was voted on by the citizens of Navasota. These bonds CANNOT be used to fund anything other than what they were designated for, and that bond was passed and that decision made several years ago. Instead focus on how we can stop all this madness, and begin working together towards a common goal, instead of venting our private frustrations, which are not even related to the issue, here in a public forum.

It appears that if you want to save money, the easiest way is to cut the assistant principals that were added to the campuses after the former superintandant left. They district was just fine when he was here. If he was still here we would not be in such a mess. The school board needs to do something fast before Teal runs us into the ground. If Teal cared as much about curriculum and finances as he does about football and the stadium we would have something good. Why did the districy pay Hildabrand 150,000 this year alone. Sounds fishy. Does anyone know what the district recieved for thier money. Is Teal trying to buy supporters? Why couldn't we have done a better job trying to keep Faltys here?

Ya, "BM" I am sure you are correct. Just as the money that is raised by the Booster Club in various towns is what pays for "extras" in the Athletic department. But don't let facts get in the way of ignorance. Otherwise, there would be no posting on these message boards.

As Mr. Hood says, " We relly don't have the numbers yet, we are not at that point" I say get to that point then start crunching numbers and see where you are, then maybe you are in such a bind after all. Makes sense to me..... People with families depend on you knowing what the numbers should be before you start taking away their jobs...

As far as the girl's coaches having a workout room....you are correct. However...ALL the equipment and furniture in that room belongs to the coaches. They brought it from their homes. They do , however, let the athletes use the room for injury rehab. etc. I know...cause I did rehab myself.

Great timing for financial woes....but hey doesn't the stadium look great!!! Still cutting 8-10 support staff jobs and will save 250,000 from that? Wow! Hand me the dust mop! Usually the easiest and least painful fat to trim works in the adm. building.I didn't see where any of those folks were being ask to resign. Those folks are usually over paid which is the reverse of your support staff.

I only hope everyone eventually gets on the same page....seems that there is a lot of conflicting information being passed around. Very strange the Super says one thing the Board President another, yet they were all in the same meeting where the same figures were discussed. Sort of makes one wonder if perhaps there is no communication in these meetings?
