Immigration

Legislation offering legal status and the hope of eventual citizenship comes up for a test vote in the Senate today.

Democrats need 60 votes to advance the measure but seem unlikely to get them. Some of their Republican allies are backing a GOP alternative instead. That plan could also come up for a vote today.

Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois told fellow lawmakers yesterday that it's a vote that will tell (M) millions of Americans, "whose side you're on."

The rival plans differ on details. But both would increase border security and both would offer some legal status to many of the men, women and children who are in the US illegally.
