The College Station Fire Department says a cigarette may be to blame for a fire at a senior living facility near Rock Prairie Road.

Officials say the fire started around 9 a.m. Friday in an apartment at the The Villas of Rock Prairie complex at 100 Mortier Drive.

Investigators say a chair, sofa, and the carpet caught on fire. Preliminary reports indicate a cigarette may be the cause of the small blaze.

The resident of the apartment was at work at the time, but several other apartments were evacuated.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.

LW - happens all the time, especially with seniors. In the mornings, they wake up, light up a cigarette, put it in the ash tray still lit, go make the bed, put on their clothes and walk out the door. Sometimes they put cigarettes on the corner of a chair or table if the ash tray is not "close" by. They just forget.

In response to the previous comment. A fire, such as in a sofa or chair, can smolder for a long time before anything catches fire. That person could very easily have been at work when the fire started. Just be glad nobody was injured.

Did this place not have sprinklers? If this took place at night while people were asleep, it may have been a tragedy.
