A Houston plastic surgeon is going to jail for running over two British women and driving away as they lay bleeding on the roadside.
Mark Douglas Gilliland made an agreement with prosecutors yesterday that calls for him to spend two years in jail and pay a ten-thousand dollar fine.
A jury convicted the 53-year-old on Monday on two charges of intoxication assault for the March 2005 accident.
Gilliland made the deal as jurors were still deliberating in the punishment phase of his trial. He faced up to 10 years in prison.
As part of the agreement, Gilliland also pleaded no contest to two charges of failure to stop and render aid. He had not yet been tried on those charges.
Joanna Moore and Amanda Holland were in Houston working as producers for a television show called "Animal Cops: Houston" when the accident occurred. Moore's skull was fractured, and Holland's jaw and ankle were broken.
