The White House is standing by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld despite more sniping by retired generals.
A growing number of military commanders who served under him say
Rumsfeld has botched the Iraq operation and ignored the advice of his generals and should be replaced.
Six retired generals this month have called for Rumsfeld's resignation, among them, former Army Major General John Batiste who's calling for a "fresh start at the Pentagon."
Military experts say those calls threaten to undermine the strong support Bush has enjoyed among the active duty officer corps and troops.
Bush's spokesman says the president "believes Secretary Rumsfeld is doing a very fine job during a challenging period in our nation's history."
Former Deputy Assistant Defense Secretary Kurt Campbell says dismissing Rumsfeld would call into question everything about the
White House strategies of the last three years.
