Will the sequel be as good after this Bryan city council drama?

The Bryan council meeting of July 29 broke down into personal attacks, all over the proposed change to city law that would mean at least three council members would have to sign off on an item being placed on council agenda.

A second reading of the ordinance will take place Tuesday, and a majority vote will make it the new law. The first reading passed during that now-infamous meeting by a 5-2 vote.

Those opposed to the change -- Councilmen Mike Southerland and Al Saenz -- said it was stifling citizen speech, while the majority said staff and council time was being wasted under the current system, especially by Southerland.

As of now, the second reading is listed under the statutory agenda, meaning there will be no discussion on the topic unless the council chooses to do so.

A number of citizens showed up to the original meeting, but after an executive session that ran long, many had to leave the meeting (which officially started at 8 a.m.) before the closed door portion ended.

Those who did speak asked that the item be tabled until an evening meeting could take place, though most of the speakers said they were opposed to the ordinance.

Saenz originally motioned to deny the ordinance change, but that was voted down in a 2-5 vote. The council then voted 5-2 in favor of the change. That first reading's approval put the second reading on the agenda for Tuesday.

Currently, it takes two council members in Bryan to place an item on an agenda. In College Station, it takes four.

Mike Sutherland just wants to hear himself speak. He is in it for the publicity he can stir up. He has not helped our neighborhood. He says one thing and then votes the opposite. This is not the militery, he needs to learn how to deal with people in a rational way. Not whine...here's some cheese.

Conlee was out of line, interupting Southerland in his speaking, so he says Southerland is the problem. What protrayal does Mayor Conlee think he making playing BIG Daddy on screen! The judgements made towards Southerland was uncalled for. Hardeman, is a JOKE! Abuse the system, ha, at least others KNOW the system. He is a sore eye for Bryan Council and an I am ashmed of his comments. All this was done on a personal note for the gang of 5! Shame on the others for sitting back and taking it, or allowing it to happen. I am sick and tied of Bryan being in the spotlight. Shame on you Mayor Conlee. What a leader! NOT!

You can still sign up on Hear Citizens to speak knowing its on the agenda. Sure they can't discuss with you, but they sure as heck can know how a citizen feels. If Bryan citizens do not take a stand, then we will always be in a hole with the so called AKA Gang of 5

Won't do any good; as the article states, THERE WILL BE NO DISCUSSION ON THE TOPIC UNLESS THE *COUNCIL* (AKA Gang of 5) CHOOSES TO DO SO! If you try to bring it up, you will be expelled.

I say pack the house

Now Bryan, what are you going to do about all of this? Sit back and let the council run us or show up and speak up!

Why wasn't this covered in the Eagle?

Sure do hope the Bryan City Council has awakened. Doesn't this indeed go against the open meetings law? Just because they can't get along, its come to this. Shame shame. Must be nice to be in charge of something and make rule and regulations to fit just you and what you want. I don't feel this is the right decision on the city's part by doing this. Think again Mr. Mayor.

Can anyone explain the open meetings law?

Hmmm, I wonder if this meeting will also be held @ 8am?

The headline (Debate to continue) is VERY misleading. Reading the text of the article, it says: "As of now, the second reading is listed under the statutory agenda, meaning there will be no discussion on the topic unless the council chooses to do so." And given the fact that the council deliberately manipulated the schedule of the first meeting to minimize public input and then ignored the public comments that WERE made, the "majority of 5" is telling the citizens of Bryan "If we want your opinion, we'll give it to you." Hopefully, the citizens will remember this come election day...

Hopefully the so called sequel as you speak won't be anything like before. Should never have happened. Shame our city is going through this

I hope Mayor Conlee and his cronies can act like grown adults in this meeting. But yet, oh yes, they will have to win their Emmy award in front of the television. I am sick and tired of seeing grown ups act like children. Let voices be heard, sit back and do your job Conlee. If Hardeman, Madison, Bienski and Horton don't want to listen, give them earplugs. Get a grip, wake up, the citizens are in charge, not you. This violates my rights and also the open meeting law. Guess you will be right up there in court like College Station was. Its a shame you have put Bryan Texas thru this personal ordeal. Behave yourself and grow up.

Won't this violate the open meetings law?

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 11, 2008 at 11:42 AM
Why should the Mayor decide on what is important for agenda and not. If even one person suggests something is important to a citizen, it should be heard. Even if he thinks its not worth hearing from him and his staff. Shame on you Mayor Conlee

This takes the voices of a citizen away and allow the council to mandate what is important to them and not. The citizens of Bryan are in charge of this city, not the council and Mayor Conlee. If for personal gain as it seemed to be expressed by the five council members, then this should have been discussed in closed doors. At least Southerland acts for the voice of Bryan and not just for a few select. This is a violation of my rights, freedom of speech, and involvement in my community.
