Houston authorities say rival immigrant smugglers are probably to blame for a gunbattle yesterday.
The shootout occurred at a Houston drop house for undocumented immigrants. Police say as many as 15 shots were fired. They were searching for three vehicles that fled the house.
Police found a group of 15 immigrants huddled in a locked closet when they responded to the scene. The immigrants included ten Mexicans, three Hondurans and two Guatemalans.
Scott Hatfield of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement says two men thought to have operated the drop house face charges. One of the men suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
Hatfield says the immigrants were taken to a federal processing center for further questioning.
