A new scam is making its way across the Brazos Valley and it could be costing you some big bucks.

You may want to think twice before you accept another collect call, because a simple $4 conversation could quickly add up to $400 on your next phone bill.

"They call you collect and then you accept the call," Janie Hart said.

Hart doesn't accept a collect call from just anyone, but when she thought law enforcement was on the other end of the line she picked up.

"He told me, 'My sergeant has a young man pulled over on the side of the road, can you call Sgt. Baker and give identification for this individual so they can release him because he doesn't have his driver's license on him'," Hart said.

The man on the other end of the phone gave her a twelve digit number to call stressing the first two numbers, *72.

That's when Janie questioned the caller...

"He's like yes ma'am you need to calm down, you just need to call my Sergeant, he gave me name Sergeant Baker," Hart said.

But when Janie hung up something just didn't feel right, so she called her phone provider.

That's when she learned *72 is a phone scam often used by inmates.

"It forwards your phone calls to that number you just dialed and that enables the prisoners to charge collect calls to your phone," Hart said.

"It's a theft of service but the problem would be tracking down what inmate did it," Alan Runge said.

Jail Administrator Alan Runge says there's anywhere from eight to 24 inmates in a cell who all use the same phone, and while they are all issued their own code they sometimes use somebody else's.

"Then you have to track down which inmate was actually doing it," Runge said. "It's hard to press a charge, the thing is don't dial a star number."

But that's easier said then done.

One thing Janie thinks makes this scam different than some others, is that this one plays to people's emotions.

"I was just worried at first because I was like what if this really is my brother," Hart said. "What if it is him pulled over on the side of the road and that's all they need is for me to call."

Janie also works for the Washington County Sheriff's Office and since she had her phone encounter, three more residents have called in with the very same complaint.

These sort of phone calls are also being reported in Brazos and Grimes counties as well.

Even Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell is not immune. He just recently received one of these phone calls on his cell phone.

Authorities say currently the majority of calls to the Brazos Valley area seem to be coming from Harris and Fayette Counties, although someone did report last week a call originating from Washington County.

The scam isn't only referred to as the *72 scam, it sometimes also goes by the name 72#.

Fraudulent callers may also ask you to dial that before a phone number.

If find yourself in this situation here's what you can do:

AT&T advises users to take charge of your incoming calls. If you doubt the identity of who you're talking to just hang up.

Also, monitor your telephone bills carefully. If you notice any irregularities contact your provider.

Lastly, protect your identity. Don't give out personal information over the phone.

I real confused by this; these forwarding options are (or at used to be) options that you have to pay extra for to get them on your phone. And since for a phone shared between multiple inmates, this service could ONLY be used for fraudulent purposes, why are these Counties SPENDING TAXPAYER MONEY to help people commit fraud? If the liberal judges who are soooo protective of the rights of criminals insist that they be entitled to phones, make it local service only, no call forwarding, waiting, conferencing, or anything else, and give each inmate an individual calling card for a few minutes of long distance per week WHEN THEY EARN IT.

If the call is actually from a county jail, the recording should give you the option of pressing the number given to block all future calls from any/all county jails. I had to do this when my brother and his wife were in county jail. It doesn't cost anything to have these calls blocked and it could save you a lot of heartache and hassle in the future. If the option is NOT given, it is probably NOT from a county jail and should be considered a scam.

Oh, c'mon, y'all? All these harsh suggestions might offend the delicate sensibilities of these legally-challenged, wrongly incarcerated individuals who, I am sure, are harmless. BLAH! I couldn't even type that with a straight face!!!! Put 'em in Arizona desert with that sheriff that makes the inmates work on the farm and live as if camping in the rough!!!! You chose to break the law, you chose to forfeit your rights afforded you by the law-abiding citizens. "Prisoner rights" is an oxymoron.

I agree that you are entitled to one phone call a day. It is the same as inmates who are in jail for violating a protective order. You would be shocked at how many still call the victim just to pick up more charges. TAKE THEIR PRIVILEDGES, MAKE THEM WEAR PINK, LET THEM SLEEP IN TENTS. Maybe we wont have such a huge population in the jail then.

We've been receiving calls from inmates in the county jail, or so they say, asking us to call a number for them. They seemed to already have information about our family. We didn't call. But think it is strange that they have called us several times. Our number must be written on the wall somewhere. We have never known anyone in jail.

Take the phones away from the inmates, they don't need them in the cells, it's a jail not a hotel. They should be allowed 1(one) phone call a day. I'm limited on how many personal calls I get at work, why the h-ll should they even have that right at all in jail.

Warning: last week while i was in a chatroom we advised a "new" chatter not to give out personal information. He was looking for someone to call him collect. Now I can not help but wonder was he trying to use this scam?

We have been getting phone calls for quite some time now from a payphone at a jail with the 979 area code. Never did connect to any one of them since they wanted to know if we would accept the charges. Just hung up!! We were concerned so we called the Brazos County Jail and they gave an 800 number to call and when we called that number, we were told that they could not do anything about it.
