A 22-year-old has been jailed on a capital murder charge in the death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son.
Joel Carlos Monteagudo was arrested yesterday. As he walked to a police car, Monteagudo denied killing little Brian Andrew Rivera.
Brian was taken to the hospital Tuesday with stomach pains and later died. The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office says the toddler sustained blunt force trauma to the abdomen. His liver was lacerated and small intestine was torn.
Brian's death pushes the number of child abuse and neglect cases in San Antonio to at least 5 in the past three weeks. It's the second involving a capital murder charge in that time.
Child Protective Services had been investigating a March incident in which Brian was treated for an injured leg.
