Find out what's lurking behind the kitchen door of your favorite restaurant. How do they fair under the watchful eye of the Brazos County Health Department? KBTX continues to look at which Brazos Valley restaurants are making the grade and which ones aren't.

Here's what inspectors found during the week of August 19:

Sonic on Briarcrest scored a 72 after inspectors found an employee not washing their hands, mold in the ice and soda machines and flies around the ice cream maker.

The dessert cooler was lacking a thermometer at Wendy's on Southwest Parkway in College Station, and the microwave was dirty. It scores an 80.

An 85 goes to El Coco Loco on Texas Avenue in Bryan where an employee with a bandage on their finger was washing dishes, while another was chewing gum in the food prep area.

It's a point higher for Golden China in Bryan for improperly storing food.

No sink towels at the Villa Maria Whataburger results in the same score of 86.

And we top things off with a 93 at GattiTown where employees were told to wear hair restraints and clean the drink nozzles.

chapter 229.163 (p)(1-2) says Hair restraints, effectiveness. (1) Except as provided in paragraph (2) of this subsection, food employees shall wear hair restraints such as hats, hair coverings or nets, beard restraints, and clothing that covers body hair, that are designed and worn to effectively keep their hair from contacting exposed food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles.(2) This section does not apply to food employees such as counter staff who only serve beverages and wrapped or packaged foods, hostesses, and wait staff if they present a minimal risk of contaminating exposed food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles. this is a violation in the county but not a markable offense. in other words, then can be noted on the report and still make a 100 as a score. But within the county they can still be fined for being noted on the inspection report three times or more.

Every person working in a food establishment should HAVE TO wear hair restraints. PERIOD! If you want to be in a fashion show, don't work with MY FOOD! So many times I have had to ask (Subway, mostly) servers to please wash their hands before preparing my food. At other places, we have seen waitresses playing with their hair and then bringing out a tray of food, leaning over it and their hair goes right in the plate. YUCK!!! Why can't/doesn't the Health Dept. enforce these rules???

I agree with you "A"concerning the Sonic near walmart in Bryan. About a year ago we order some food from there and there was a bunch, not a little, a bunch of hair in my hamberger as well as friend that was with me. We both went right back up there and demanded our money back. The manager was asked if we wanted more food and I just looked at him like he was from Mars. We just asked for our money back and that would be the end of it. He also gave us some coupons for free food but I never used them. If you watch this report often you will have noticed that this particular Sonic has scored low three times in the last year. The should close it down. I will never buy from there again.

who wears hairnets or hats anymore? workers are required to but not the management, check out all the fast food places someone is always serving you without a hairnet or hat on and when they are questioned the answer will be "I am the manager" Maybe the Health Dept should work after 5pm and catch the places who take the hats off after 5pm or the ones who don't wear gloves, with dirty clothes on, picking their noses, handling money and not washing their hands the list goes on and on.... Maybe the a fine should be given! If a fine is not given, well why not?

After reading about the Sonic in Bryan, the Wendy's in CS, and several others on this report...all I can say is GROSS!!! They are now on our "we won't spend our hard earned money there" list. By the way, this list got started about a year and a half ago when we ate at the Luby's on Texas Avenue in Bryan, and we wathed the servers dishing out our food with BARE hands and one of those hands came in contact with my food. No telling where those hands had been before they started serving food. It only seems right that these eateries should be expected to take care when serving the public and bare hands on my food will not fly. Anyway, I didn't eat that which came in contact with flesh. I probably should have sent it back right away, but at the time would not have done so. Things are different now. Not only would I have sent it back, but I would have spoken to the manager and maybe asked him or her if they would have eaten it after seeing what I saw.
