After over two decades of debate, a decision has finally been made about a proposed landfill for Brenham. In a 6 to 1 decision, the city council voted down the dump deal by agreeing to sell the proposed site near Highway 290 without a landfill permit.
Dozens of Chapel Hill residents once again packed Thursday's city council meeting to oppose the measure. The council says the decision was based on the strong opposition along with a recent study which found it would cost more to operate a landfill than sticking with the current program of hauling trash to Austin.
Without the landfill permit the property is valued at around $1 million. With the permit, it would be worth $4 to $8 million.
