BRYAN -- The Mike Sherman era of Texas A&M football begins Saturday evening against the Arkansas State Red Wolves at Kyle Field.

Tonight at 6:26 on KBTX, the News 3 Sports Team takes an in depth look at the '08 Texas Aggie football team during our 22nd annual preview show: Aggie Football 2008, Past & Present Meet The Future.

The show will break down the new look offense, tell you about the revamped defense, as well as discuss the special teamers.

The show will also tell you about the new A&M football assistant coaches. Some already have ties to Aggieland, while some are joining the staff because they believe in what Mike Sherman stands for, not just as a coach, but also as a person.

Now Aggie football head coaches have fared well in debut games in recent years with Emory Bellard, Tom Wilson, R.C. Slocum and Dennis Franchione winning their first games at Texas A&M. Historically, however, debut games have not been kind to A&M coaches with Paul “Bear” Bryant (1954), Jim Myers (1958), Hank Foldberg (1962), Gene Stallings (1965) and Jackie Sherrill (1982) losing initial games since 1950. In school history, the Aggies are 18-9 in debut games under a new head coach.

During Sherman’s run as an assistant coach at A&M from 1989-93 and 1995-96, the Aggies compiled a 6-1 record in season-openers with
the lone loss coming against BYU in Provo in the 1996 opener. It will be Sherman’s first game as a head coach since the 17th week of the
2005 NFL season when the Green Bay Packers handed the Seattle Seahawks a 23-17 defeat at Lambeau Field.
