Enron Trial Winding Down

By  |

The marathon fraud and conspiracy trial of Enron officials Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling is nearing an end, with the judge anxious to put it in the jury's hands.

The judge says he's confident both sides can wrap up testimony by Thursday.

After that, there will be up to two days of closing arguments before the case goes to the jury.

Twenty-seven witnesses have testified for the defense - including Lay and Skilling - and five more are scheduled.

Prosecutors called 22 witnesses, and they expect to call 10 rebuttal witnesses.

Lay and Skilling are accused of repeatedly lying to investors and employees about Enron's financial health and hiding debt and
inflated profits.
