Three years ago Friday, Katrina unleashed her wrath on New Orleans. Since then residents have tried to put the storm behind them and rebuild.

However, a new storm, Gustav, has people in the Big Easy hunkering down, and one College Station resident says all the memories are coming back.

Antonio Gibson fled New Orleans before Katrina hit. The former defensive back for the New Orleans Saints didn't know when or if his family would ever return.

"Who would have ever expected Katrina to be Katrina," Gibson said.

Gibson and his family evacuated to College Station and for the past three years, they've called this town home.

"We just looked at it as being something temporary and you know things have kind of picked up for us," Gibson said.

Gibson trains young athletes with big aspirations, and his family has settled into life outside the Big Easy.

However, news of Gustav heading toward New Orleans has re-kindled memories of the 2005 tragedy.

"I think people went back just out of hope, but egos and emotions are still fragile even for those who are there," Gibson said.

Gibson re-built his family's home in New Orleans and visits relatives and friends on a regular basis. He says the city is recovering, but has a long way to go.

"They are trying," Gibson said. "It's just not coming back as fast as those who would want to stay there would like for it to come back."

As residents brace for Gustav they're praying that it won't be a repeat of Katrina.

New Orleans was forced to cancel some ceremonies marking Katrina's anniversary as it prepares for Gustav.

One ceremony that did take place included a horse-drawn carriage that brought seven unclaimed bodies of Hurricane Katrina victims to a memorial site where they were entombed.

I am terribly sorry for Mr. Gibson's loss. We need to always remember that the responsibility for being prepared for a disaster rests with the individual. It is each individual family's responsibility to acquire food, water, health care items, prescriptions, flashlights, lanterns, a camp stove or means of cooking, a firearm and any other disaster related supplies. The lesson from Katrina is if you wait for local, state or federal government assistance you will be waiting a long time. I try to live by the motto of the boy scouts. It is "Be Prepared". Although the Brazos valley does not have to worry about storm surge from a hurricane, we could see flooding, tornadoes and strong winds. It is very possible we could be without power for a week or so. Mosquitoes will be rampant after intense rains. There is also the possibility that criminals could seek refuge here. Don't think the police can come help you when traffic on major highways is backed up as far as you can see in both directions.

(Your link to Mr. Gibson's training doesn't work.) It was regrettable that such hardship brought so many from NO to BCS, but after getting to know a number of these families, I value their friendship and contributions to life here in the Brazos Valley. Here's hoping this storm will do minimal damage and take no lives.
