A new program funded by the state will give Brazos Valley residents a chance to brush up on a deadly potential problem.

Next week, these booklets on the pandemic flu will be sent to 137,000 homes in seven local counties.

While the mutation of the season flu bug into a deadly epidemic is hard to predict, health officials say millions worldwide could die as a result, crippling businesses and schools.

According to the health department, the last pandemic came in 1968 and 1969, when 700,000 people died, including 34,000 Americans. The pandemic outbreak of 1918 and 1919, more than 50 million people worldwide died.

A nearly $200,000 grant from the Texas Department of State Health Services, Region 7 was used to buy and send out the books.

For the better part of this decade, the Brazos Valley Council of Governments has made pandemic flu awareness a priority. They collaborated with the Brazos County Health Department to put together the booklet.

Once a resident receives the handbook, the health department is asking readers to provide feedback at the department's website, which is linked below this story.

I'll be looking for this - it looks as though the book has a lot of good information for my family.

Great idea, all the experts say it;s not if but when a flu pandemic will occur. I for one will read and take action to prepare myself and my family. Folks we need to take all precautions and be ready for any emergency. Let's not count on the government to immediately come to our aid. Thanks

This is a great idea and I thank our community leaders for helping us get prepared should we experience an outbreak of flu pandemic. Let's all remember we need to be prepared to help ourselves first. bill

The release of this book is at a pretty good time. There's just been a report of people fleeing from a mysterious illness in India. I wonder if it's rumor filled panic or legit. If it gets attention in our national news arena, we'll have our own rumor-induced panic.

Why skip the fact we've been in a Pandemic Alert due to (high fatality rate) H5N1, "birds and beasts" flu; human-to-human clusters of which have been being fought in many countries with international & local Response and Containment measures, and donated Tamiflu, to delay pandemic the past few years, and supposedly, buy us time to prepare? Why no link to pandemicflu.gov which has been up since Oct. 2005? Public was supposed to help "plan". Or the "US State Dept H5N1 factsheet" up since July, 2006, warning travellers may be stranded by outbreak containment measures taken by other nations and/or the US, and will Not be given any aid at embassies in a pandemic. Compare your booklet to a site hosted by some of Idaho's Emergency Management as part of their pre-pandemic outreach; GetPandemicReady.org Mr.Fulheart might like to look at these conf. slides from Dr.Osterholm of CIDRAP (start at pdf p18) http://conference.logisticshealth.com/docs/slideshow.pdf Go GetPandemicReady
