Lawnmowers will be getting a bit greener under new rules issued today by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The regulations call for a 35% emissions reduction from
new gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment beginning in 2011.
In 2010, big emission reductions will also be required for speedboats and other recreational watercraft.

The head of the National Association of Clean Air Agencies says
the resulting reductions will be the equivalent of removing one out
of every five cars and trucks on the road.
The EPA says about 190 million gallons of gasoline will be saved
each year when the new rules take effect.
Also, more than 300
premature deaths would be prevented annually.

The EPA estimates the changes will cost about 236 million dollars a year.
That will likely be made up by consumers in the form of more expensive lawnmowers and other machines.

Remember when u could buy gas cans that were vented or lawn mowers with a primer bulb? Good ol govt policy - if something works good better change it. Theyre gonna save us from ourselves.

LW shows why I never vote Republican. I wouldn't want people to think I was illogical.

Finally the EPA is stepping up and regulating manufacturers to be held accountable as well. I read on http://www.lawnmowersworld.com that other countries will still have problems for more than 20 years which is kind of depressing.

How can they say that this will prevent 300 premature deaths/year? I have a lawn mower that is probably 20 years old. It isn't the greatest as far as emissions go, but definitely more well built than any new mower! Only thing I've ever had to do to it is sharpen the blade!

Okay. I will get rid of my lawn mower. Is it legal in Bryan to have Billy-Goats?

How could anyone possibly know how many premature deaths would be prevented by lowering lawn mower emissions?

The EPA estimates the changes will cost about 236 million dollars a year. "That will likely be made up by consumers in the form of more expensive lawnmowers and other machines." - That's how we are getting the shaft.

How can less emissions and lower fuel usage be giving consumers the shaft? I am willing to pay $10 or $20 more for a lawnmower if overall it helps reduce our dependance on overseas oil and is better for the environment. Little steps like this will eventually make a big difference.

I don't see how that much fuel will be saved. Usually the maker are designing a new product, they have to focus so much on meeting emission standards, tha t economy goes out the door. They'll probably be using even more fuel now.

That's right folks it will not be long before you have to take your lawn mower and bass boat for a smog check!
