Rita Bus Fire Victims Reach a Settlement

Victims of a bus explosion that killed 23 nursing home patients fleeing Hurricane Rita have reached a settlement with the bus company and travel broker.

Global Limo, the owner of the bus, and BusBank, which hired the bus company for the nursing home, will pay the group eleven (M) million dollars. That's the maximum coverage of the firms' insurance policies, according to court records.

The Dallas Morning News reports that the money will be divided among the 21 survivors and the families of the 23 people who died.

The bus caught fire near Dallas last September after leaving Houston with residents of the Brighton Gardens nursing home. Some passengers and the driver escaped, but the flames trapped many inside.

A lawyer for some of the victims says the passengers agreed the settlement was the best option because the companies insurance policies appear to be their main assets.

A BusBank spokeswoman declined comment. Global Limo did not return phone calls for comment.
