Opinions are many, and mixed, over the case of a local construction worker who claims to have found a noose at his workplace.

Although the company says it's a situation that has been blown out of proportion, the worker who found it says it has had a profound emotional effect on him.

But why does a noose evoke such strong emotions from some while other dismiss it?

"In many ways, the hangman's noose has unfortunately been associated with African-Americans," said Dr. James Jones, Prairie View A&M University Professor of History. "It has been particularly bothersome and cumbersome and it has followed us throughout our time here in America."

According to Jones, those who minimize the symbolism of the noose, are missing the point. "For those who consider it just a rope and that it is not a noose, I would simply say that it comes from either, and or, ignorance or intolerance or insensitivity."

So, did his job fire him because he asked about the NOOSE? No, they tried to talk to him. I'm black also. To me it looked like a rope with a loop in it. Because to me to become a noose they would have had an object hanging from it. Just my thoughts.

Waste of time, but the media will drive it in the ground.

Unfortunately, this has become an issue in America where the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Maybe I'll start squeaking everytime I get called a cracker or honky because that offends me. Or next time someone cuts in front of me in traffic...you get the idea.

Dear Anonymous: Wasn't it Jewish people who protested the Mel Gibson movie The Passion of Christ ? Racial insensitivity is everywhere, and its because we live in a society where a few group of people in ALL races think they can say and do anything. Everyone needs to leave everyone alone and go to work and do their jobs and just that. People go too far with their "jokes"

This noose debate is rediculous. This is like me saying when I see a black person that he is associated with slavery, since I am jewish and we were the slaves of the African Egyptians before Moses took us out of Egypt. Maybe I should try to claim I am owed compensation by every African decendant because of what my ancestors went through.

ya know some years back at a construction my hubby and i worked at there were racial slurs being spray painted and written in port-a-potties walls of the buildings. there was an african-american guy that came to work daily with a camera and took pictures of these things. he was one of several african-americans working on the job site. i was the only woman on the site i did construction so was out on the site working. well this man screamed racism daily. the person doing it was finally caught in the act of writing the words. oh my gosh!!!!! would you believe it was the same africian-american man taking the pictures and screaming do something they are saying bad things about me and my race. but he couldn't be fired for this cause he's a minority. now this is wrong and this is a very true story.

there wouldn't be any racism if they didn't make everything associated black or white. If someone put a noose on my desk I might be emotionaly disturbed but I wouldn't even think about the color of my skin. Oh wait if I'm white it's not a noose....just a rope that could strangle me.

We can not analyze anothers emotional response based on our own personal perspective. The man said he saw what he perceived as a "noose" at his place of work. He conveyed that he thought it was a qesture designed to deliver a message to him personally. He obviously has trust issues with his co-workers. He may be the victim of his own imagination. If someone intended this for a joke or to threaten him, they need either professional help or discipline.

Wasn't public hanging the form of death punishment back in the day to any criminal reguardless of race? Some people don't want to let go of the past, people of all races.

There have been alot of white people hanged. Why is it any different??? I am so sick of the black and white stuff. There are good and bad in all races. And we all bleed red if cut. Grow Up!!
