High school Football players across Texas put in some sweat on friday nights. One Brenham coach thinks that hard work on the field should translate in the classroom.

Football Defensive Coordinator Craig Agnew says students who play sports should get more elective credit.

Under the current system, high schoolers need 26 credits to graduate.

At seven classes a year, over four years, theoretically kids should graduate with 28 credits, unless a student needed to take a remedial, or no credit class.

To graduate, students need a year-and-a -half of athletics, and three-and-a-half elective credits.

Brenham coach Craig Agnew wants to see four years of sports count towards more of those elective credits.

Now, regardless of how long a student plays a school sport, he or she can only count two years. That fulfills the athletic requirement and a half credit of electives.

Agnew has taken his concerns to the State Board of Education. They'll be discussing his proposal later this month.

"Its been emphasized for thousands and thousands of years that you have to train the body and the mind," said Board of Education Chairman Don McLeroy, of College Station.

"What coach Agnew is bringing to us is the fact that we wanna keep as many kids in athletics as possible. And I agree with that."

McLeroy believes the rest of the board will to. "It really helps the athlete, otherwise they are really under the gun."

The board will discuss the changes at its meeting in a week and a half, and is expected to vote in November.

If approved, McLeroy says he's unsure if the measure would be retroactive. Meaning current high school freshman and sophomore athletes, could still only get two years of credit for four years of sports.

To Teacher in Brenham. You want to see more students in athletics? More students won't be in athletics for two more credits. That is not the motivation for athletes. Why not turn your statement around and get more athletes to be better students? There are good examples of this...but there could always be more. A.D. West is great at emphasizing this. More high school athletes have the chance at a good career in 99.999% of fields other than as a professional athlete. Better students make better coaches, too. If Coach Agnew had a valid request, A.D. West would be carrying the ball instead of him.

I agree with everything posted by "theDoctor" but I go a little further to state that no athlete really needs extra credit. Historically, many have made it without it and I too believe all will be fine if they do not get it. Education is the first priority.

Cinders, You are ignorant of the facts. Your sons received 4 years of credit for all that time spent in band. Those who spent their time in athletics did not receive credit for every year. Coach Agnew is looking for fairness. As a teacher in Brenham, I want to see more students involved in athletics. For many of my students, athletics is the only thing that keeps them motivated in the classroom. Without athletics, many students would drop out of school or just not care about their grades. At least those students in athletics have adults who mentor and discipline them. Students should not be punished for their involvement in athletics.
