A student pilot and his instructor were killed in the crash of their small plane at a South Plains airport.

The crash happened at Levelland's airport, about 30 miles west of Lubbock.

The Texas Department of Public Safety identifies the dead as 24-year-old Anand Paul Quadros and his 63-year-old instructor, Dennis Michaels of Lubbock. D-P-S spokesman John Gonzales says both died on impact in the crash just before dusk yesterday. Quadros' hometown wasn't available.

Gonzales says the two had just taken off from the Levelland airport in a Cessna 150-F when the pilot reported engine trouble. He was trying to turn around for an emergency landing when the plane crashed.
