A yacht owner and his deck hand were arrested for an attempt to use the boat to smuggle six illegal immigrants north to Corpus Christi. That's according to a report by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Officials say the immigrants were smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border at McAllen and brought to South Padre Island, where they boarded the yacht early Sunday morning.
Yacht owner Mack Daniel Bryant and deck hand Baldemar Valadez Junior were arrested along with the immigrants several hours later when the yacht reached Corpus Christi. Officials seized the yacht.
Bryant and Valadez made initial court appearances yesterday.
The smugglers were allegedly trying to circumvent inland Border Patrol checkpoints about 60 miles north of the border.
