A College Station man is dead after police say he was accidentally shot by his roommate.

It happened in the three hundred block of Fraternity Row just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers say Keller Benjamin Verett's roommate was showing an accessory on a gun and had that gun pointed in the direction of Verett. That's when police say the weapon accidentally fired with a bullet hitting the 24-year-old in the head.

Police performed CPR until medics arrived to rush Verett to the College Station Medical Center.

Officers say upon arriving to the hospital, Verett died from his injuries.

Texas A&M's website lists Verett as an EMS technician at the university's health center.

When the investigation into the shooting is complete, police will turn their findings over to the district attorney's office, which will determine if charges will be filed against the shooter.

It was an Honor working with you Keller, no matter what the people say on here, when we were in Galveston last week I wish I would have gotten pictures of all of us together, you will always be remembered and I will see you again! Rest in peace brother!

Mark Harris - Wish You Were Here I wanted to tell you how closely I’ve kept The memories of you in my heart And all of the lifetimes that we had to share Live even though we’re apart But don’t cry for me ‘Cause I’m finally free To run with the angels On streets made of gold To listen to stories of saints new and old To worship our Maker That’s where I’ll be When you finally find me No don’t you be weary cause waiting for you Are wonders that you’ve never known Just hold on to Jesus, reach out for his hands And one day They’ll welcome you home And that’s when you’ll be Finally free Finally free I wish you were here, I wish you were here And all of the dreams that you treasure Will soon come together And that’s when your sorrow will find tomorrow And you will rise again We'll run with the angels on streets made of gold We’ll listen to stories of saints new and old We’ll worship our maker that’s where we’ll be When you finally find me I wish you were here

My deepest sympathies for Keller's family. What a great loss. To those that still think guns kill, PLEASE, it is the PERSON behind the gun that kills, even in horrible accidents like this one.

This ACCIDENT term is frequently misused in todays society. This is a case of poor judgment in the use of the firearm. Consider a person who used bad judgement and gets into a car after long hours or drinking, and then a bad event happens, is this an ACCIDENT or an unintended event that could have been easily prevented ?

Such simple words, My heart goes out to the Verrets for yet another tragedy in their lives. I have known the Verrets since I was just a child. Keller will be truly missed by all who knew him!

Could you imagine the horrific pain the other student is going through...Knowing you had killed someone. I have a friend who was driving and lost control of the vehicle. He had killed his best friend in the passenger seat. Or Steven Curtis Chapman's son hitting his youngest daughter. Man, we really need to lift this kid up right now in prayer. I know many have lost, but we have to live for the living.

To Jared - very well stated! I am certain this was a fine young man and it goes without saying that he had great friends. I am sorry for your loss. You too sound like a fine young person. May God be with you all that loved Keller and you are so right - he is now watching over you from heaven!

treat every gun as if it is loaded!! a rule in gun handling. the dude who accidentally shot him should never be able to possess a gun again!!

Keller was a great friend who was loved by everyone he encountered. This is a sickening loss of young talent and life. I am thankful to have had Keller as a friend for the past few years and will forever remember him for his smile and ability to make others laugh. No matter how bad your day was, seeing Keller always made you feel just a little better. His roomates are both wonderful guys. The three of them each dedicated their careers to caring for others, the most noble of trades. The Aggie EMS community is very close knit, brought together by overcoming obstalces and hardships only those intimately involved will ever truly understand. I never in my wildest dream expected we would face anything like this together. But as we have done before and we will do again, Kellers friends and coworkers will regain our composure and continue to serve the communities we care for, one person at a time, knowing now that our brother Keller is watching over our every step.

I think accident is used too loosely when these things happen, almost as a scapegoat. I'm sure the roommate had no intent beforehand or during the evening to shoot his friend, but it's more of a tragic reckless incident. Black, white, young or old there are certain cautions you should use when handling a dangerous firearm. There were two people in the room and only one of them can give his perception of the incident. Let the police investigate and turn their findings over to the DA, because there was a loss of life and until then you are just guessing if it's an accident or reckless homicide.

I pray that God will ease the pain of all the parties involved. It is such a shame.

My heart goes out to the Keller's Family. His mom died about 2 years ago of Breast Cancer. I have known this young man since he was in the first grade and he was an outstanding young person. I pray for his roommate. Kellers heart would break if he knew the burden his roommate is carry now and always will have to carry. Keller would say forgive yourself it was an accident, God loves you and forgives you and so do I. Keller comes from a very religous family. Their faith has been tested many times and they will prevail. I was amazed at Kellers Dad when he preached Kellers mom's funeral. It was about making sure all could know Christ and live a fruitful life. That is the Verett way. Awesome family.

It’s so sad to hear of the Verett family’s tragic loss. I can’t begin to imagine the pain all of his closest friends, family, and co-workers are experiencing with his loss. I only met Keller once but I know he was a wonderful person and its so sad to hear about this tragic accident. To the Verett family, I offer my heartfelt sympathy and will keep you in my prayers.

Lisa,I posted earlier, but it didn't sound right - sorry. I was offended by the quotations around accidental. That's what "there is no 'accidental' about it" meant. These two friends are very honorable people and instead of accusing we should be praying for them and their families. I apologize for not communicating clearly early this morning!

This is sad. I feel for his family, but more so for the young man who will now trudge through life bearing this burden. These kinds of accidents are becoming more common. I think anyone who wants to keep a gun in their home should not only have to take shooting and safety lessons, but go through a training viewing these kinds of accidents. Not until you see what guns can do, do you really realize the impact one mis-fire could have.

First, my prayers for all families involved. Keller came to assist us in SW LA and his dedication and loyalty to his work goes beyond what most people think of doing. Focus on the GOOD that Keller did and keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. SW LA thanks all of those who came to assist us. We will be there for you and to continue you Keller's legacy to serve others, not be served.

To Chevy - How can your heart go out to his family when it's obvious that you don't have a heart! First of all, this was not a CRIME, it ws an ACCIDENT, and second of all, how can you say this is a "dumb, stupid college station aggie activity". A family just lost their precious son. I did not know this young man, but it sounds like he was a great guy. I don't care what city this happened in it is still a tragedy, and for people to compare the two cities in something like this is a disgrace. My heart truly does go out to both families. May God help you find peace and comfort.

Posted by: SH on Sep 18, 2008 at 03:16 PM
Chevy! How rude an uncalled for. There is crime in both cities HOWEVER, no crime was committed here. They have to hand it to the DA as matter of procedure. This was an accident between friends. I did not graduate from A&M but college students are far from DUMB! Carefree sometimes maybe but certainly not dumb. They are in college after all. His roommate will have to live with this forever. Be careful who you blame. Handling weapons is a very serious thing, you should always use caution and treat it as though it could go off at any given moment. God Bless the families!

Posted by: Lisa Location: Bryan on Sep 18, 2008 at 02:57 PM
To Chevy, if you had the heart to send to anyone then you would know better then to say things like "looks like some dumb, stupid, college station aggie activity to me" ANYONE can have an ACCIDENT. I'm sure your perfect though and nothing bad ever happens to you! We should all be so lucky! And Anon, what does this mean? "There is no "accidental" about it." TC, you could use a lesson in manners more then anyone I know at the moment! Anyone who knew the other person involved would know that it was not done on purpose. I hope that person knows that we4 all care and are there for them. And that this has crushed many people. My prayers are with Keller's family. I also pray to God for peace, serenity over all of those who knew and loved Keller. That God will keep His hands on this situation. He can never be replaced. Keller was always making you smile. He was witty and smart. We love you and miss you Keller!

Kbtx I think it's a little tacky to put quotations around accidental. I'm pretty certain that this young man did not mean to shoot his roommate. My prayers are with the families of these two men. God bless you.

Always! Always! remember the four rules of gun safety! 1. Always treat a gun as if it was loaded. 2. Never point a gun at anything you do not wish to destroy. 3. Keep you finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire. 4. Always be sure what is behind your target. My prayers to the familes for their loss.

Keller and all of his roommates are kind, compassionate health care providers. And so much fun!!! My heart goes out to his family and all who knew him. My heart goes out even more to the roommate who was involved. He, too, is a wonderful person who contributes daily to the health and safety of others. Let's not let this tragedy take two victims. Let's all pray for him as much as for Keller and family.

I Think this is a very sad day for the families. My Prayer is that they get though this. But, I also have to wonder, if this was two black young men who where roommates, would this be considered a Simple "ACCIDENT"?, or would this have been a crime, like robbery or some hate crime.

Posted by: Caitlin Location: College Station on Sep 18, 2008 at 12:33 PM
I've had the privilege of knowing Keller for the last 3 years, and his roommate for 5 . I've worked with both of them, and my heart breaks for both them and their families. Keller was an awesome guy who always had a huge grin and a hug just when you needed it. He and his roommate are both outstanding citizens who have done more for this community than most will ever know. Keller and I worked on the ambulance together evacuating people from Houston before hurricane Rita hit, and it hurts because I know he had so many more years left to serve in EMS, so many more people to help. I have no doubt that this was a freak accident - and it breaks my heart because it goes to show that sometimes even people with years of experiance with firearms can make mistakes. My thoughts and prayers are with Keller, his family, his roommate's family, and all of those who know them, love them, and work with them.

Posted by: Beth Location: College Station on Sep 18, 2008 at 12:01 PM
This is horrible. The world has lost a great man. Keller, I was just talking to you the other day. You were so happy that you had received your college ring, and you were excited about graduation. I'm sorry that it all ended so soon for you. I love you, you were a great co-worker and a great friend! I will miss you and be praying for you family!

Posted by: J Location: College Station on Sep 18, 2008 at 11:41 AM
Chevy, First I want to say this wasn't a crime, this was truly an accident. I personally know both Keller and the shooter and they were extremely close. Both of them are extremely intelligent EMS professionals. To make an inference that this was "some dumb, stupid, aggie activity" is not only ignorant on your part, but disrespectful to keller, his friends, and his family. I hope everyone knows that this is an extremely tragic accident that has taken a great person's life and left his best friend's life in pieces. my thoughts and prayers are with them both.

Posted by: To Alex on Sep 18, 2008 at 11:27 AM
The main reason to hold a CHL is if you plan to use a handgun for hunting or competition and you might get stopped for any reason while traveling through Austin, Houston, or DFW to get where you need to go. SOME (not many, and getting less every year) of the cops in these metro areas think it's cute to enforce the EXACT letter of the law which still says that they are required to seize your handgun until you prove to a judge that you qualify as "legally traveling" in order to get it back UNLESS you have a CHL (in which case they are required to return it before they release you from the scene). Of course every time a Judge slaps one of these idiots up side the head (legally) for wasting the court's time, the cops update their procedure manuals to reflect the ruling and it becomes a little less necessary...

To Chevy: "looks like some dumb, stupid, college station aggie activity to me" and then you say your heart goes out. How pathetic of you to use a tragic ACCIDENT and use it for your own personal vendetta against College Station. You should be ashamed of yourself. You embarrass yourself. You embarrass anybody who lives in this area.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Bryan on Sep 18, 2008 at 11:16 AM
To Chevy, everyone is entitled to their opinion but you are heartless to make such stupid comments. This was not a crime, it was an ACCIDENT. This is so sad. I cannot beleive that this happened. I was always taught that your guns should be pointed down or at the intended target, to always keep them unloaded and on safety when not "in use" and ALWAYS act as though it could fire at any time. What a sad day for this family. I hope that they can forgive Keller's roommate.

Anon - Why would anyone get a CHL? They put so many restrictions on it it is useless and actually more of a danger to yourself legally. Plus you have to turn in your fingerprints like a criminal. The very act of requesting it turns a right into a priviledge. I've known johnny-come-lately types - such as the ones who typically sign up for CHL - and they have that mindset you describe. But to me it is second-nature. Common sense.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 18, 2008 at 06:32 AM
The own side of an armed population; it's all very well to send CHL candidates to a class that makes them chant "always point the muzzle in a safe direction" 100 times, but there's no way to make them DO it after they leave...

Posted by: TC Location: CS on Sep 18, 2008 at 06:27 AM
My mom always said, "Don't ever point a gun at anyone". Seems like these guys could have used that lesson. Sad, very sad.
