The Montgomery County Animal Shelter is in desperate need of your help. Since Ike hit, the shelter has taken in dozens of animals from shelters in the Houston-Galveston area. Now those animals need a home.

The animal shelter says these animals usually go to rescue groups, but those groups have also been affected by the storm.

Animal shelter officials say if these animals are not adopted or taken by foster families by Friday, the shelter will begin euthanizing the animals.

The shelter will be open Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and all adoptions are free.

The shelter is not taking any more animals until power is restored, but it says people continue to abandon their pets outside of the shelter.

If you'd like to adopt or foster an animal, you can call the Montgomery County Animal Shelter at 936-442-7738.

Hi, Thanks to all for the over-whelming support for MCAS! Almost all the dogs and cats are now adopted or in foster care. No animals were euthanized due to space considerations. Animals in foster care currently still need forever homes however! Additionally, we get between 1400-2450 animals per month in this county, so we are always in need of good homes for these animals! If you need a contact number or email please feel free to use 713-201-7306 or mspiotter@yahoo.com. Finally, as of 9-25-08 at the following website you will be able to see pictures of the animals currently in our shelter. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mocoshelterphotos/ Thanks so much for all the support! What a great community story!

Why doesn't PETA help with money for these animals? They stated that over 10 million was in the PETA coffers. Why have they not spent some of the donated money from the movie industry (Pam Anderson) on these poor animals? It seems the only time you hear of PETA is in relation TAKING donations. Where does their donations go?

I wanted to update on this story. I just spoke with someone from the Montgomery Shelter. She said our community came out in full force, over 500 people from our area showed up to adopt pets. As of now every pet had a home. She said more would probally come in as recovery efforts continued. Please check in with them later, they made need more help! I hope KBTX with have a follow-up on this story! What a great thing our community did! Way to go everyone!!
