Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation says the personal information of one-point-three million of its borrowers has been lost.
The company says a contractor lost a piece of equipment containing the borrowers' names and Social Security numbers on May 24th. The company learned about the loss Friday and spent the weekend identifying the affected borrowers.
The Round Rock-based company says there is no evidence that the information has been misused.
The contractor that lost the unidentified piece of equipment is Toronto-based Hummingbird Limited, which manages large amounts of information for other companies. A Hummingbird official says the company is still searching for the equipment.
Texas Guaranteed says it will notify the affected borrowers by mail starting this week. The missing equipment contains information on about ten percent of the company's total number of borrowers.
