It's a tragic, but familiar scene on Highway 6: emergency responders cordoning off a scene of twisted metal, mangled cars, broken glass and shattered lives.

Ambulances navigated a littered Highway 6 Thursday evening, just south of Hearne. Unfortunately, most of those ambulances weren't used.

"There are four deaths, all from the Lincoln," said State Trooper Broderick Sims.

Troopers say a grey Lincoln clipped the right front of the an 18-wheeler, as both were traveling south.

"Spun out and broadsided by a white Dodge traveling northbound," said Sims.

Troopers say the Dodge's driver was taken to St. Joseph Regional Health Center by ambulance, and was conscious.

Of the four children and one adult in the Lincoln, only one survived the crash. Family members say she is a Calvert second grader, and was air-lifted to Scott and White in Temple.

"I think there were major injuries to the little girl that was flown," said Sims.

Relatives say three of her siblings, and their grandmother, didn't make it.

"Everybody was ejected at least 15, 20 feet," said Sims. "The driver of the car, she was sitting next to the driver door. I don't believe seat belts were used in this accident."

An accident that has shattered a family, and is one those on scene won't soon forget.

"This has been the worst accident I've seen. It has been the worst accident I've seen since I've been in the county, because of not wearing seatbelts," said Sims.

Died in the accident are 2 year old Demonyea Jackson, 4 year old Starr Jackson, 10 year old Devonte Jackson, and 64-year-old Daisy Jackson. The Jackson family is from Calvert

Devenna Jackson, 7, the only one in the 2002 Lincoln Town Car to survive the wreck remained Friday at Scott and White Hospital in Temple. Her condition was not known.

The driver of the dodge is a female in her early 20s.

No word yet on her condition, or that of the little girl.

yes, you should wear a seat belt... BUT who is to say that the seat belt would have saved anyone for sure ... YOU DON'T KNOW. Play the what if game... You can't change the past or predict what would have happened! I'm praying for the family. Stay strong!

I continue to be amazed at the posters who accept the fact that children died from a lack of education and committment and only want prayers, understanding, and forgiveness. I will continue to be angry and hope that no other child will die due to a caregiver's lack of knowing how to properly restrain a child. You know what, I don't really care if I offend family members. I only care about saving lives of others who might be reading this. Use a safety seat, use a booster seat, use a seatbelt! They save lives, I promise.

"but when your driving on any road your not just driving for yourself your driving for those who may run a stop sign or a red light or those who are under the influence of alchol or intoxicated so the 18 wheeler could have slowed down" I know that this sounds hateful, but I feel that I need to say that it isn't the 18 wheeler's job to always drive 20 mph or less down the road because someone MIGHT come whipping around him and clip his bumper because they think he's driving too slowly even at 60. But it IS the driver's job to make sure that all the underaged passengers are secure. As far as it being part of a greater plan, while God does plan for us to behave right, he ALLOWS us not to follow his plans. Of course, when we don't do as he wants, bad things sometimes happen, but that's the down side of free will.

Wow! some of the things people are writing on here these families can do without. Just remember, you never know when you or any of your family members could be in a similar situation so don't be quick to judge and point fingers. What has happened is done and no one can be taken from this earth w/o God's permission. Everyone has their time to go and sometimes we're just not ready. God be with the Jackson family and my prayers are with ya'll as well as the prayers of my church in hearne. We don't have to understand why just trust God. Tell your loved ones you love them every chance you get. To all who are submitting negative responses I pray for you too, please stop wasting your time hurting others and spend time praying for them. Like i said before don't be quick to judge b/c your time might be ending soon as well or that of your loved ones. Rest In Peace to all the victims of the accident and HOLD ON DE'VENNA, GOD SPARED YOU FOR A REASON BABY! HE'S GONNA USE YOU FOR HIS PURPOSE!

I have lost close friends and family members in car accidents. I know what this family is going through. However, I don't see a problem with viewers leaving comments about the lack of child passenger restraint. Many of us are angry and outraged from this accident and this is a convenient place to share our anger. Hopefully, children's lives will be saved due to a parent or grandparent reading about this horrific accident and deciding to educate themselves about what type of restraint their child needs to be safe in a vehicle.

Voter and the rest who say local sheriffs don't write tickets to locals - welcome to Texas where we elect judges and sheriffs. That is a sad reality. But everyone should point the finger at themselves. Who hasn't gotten a ticket and tried to get out of it? Made a call to a commisioner or get the judge to the side at church? Lets point the fingers at ourselves before pointing them at others.

You can't go back and rewrite the past people! Four of God's beautiful children died and all you can do is come up with negative comments and fingerpointing? KBTX needs to stop allowing comments to be made about the news. There are too many hate-filled and self-righteous know-it-alls who post here (ya'll should be ashamed). This family needs prayer and positive support. Please disable comments KBTX!!!!!!!!!

Robertson county does not do traffic patrol or write traffic tickets period.

Reply to Anonymous sep 27 8:37am- Gerald(Robertson County Sheriff) will not let his deputies work traffic because they might write a ticket to a Robertson county voter and he would loose a vote! Gerald is more worried about votes than babies lives! SHAME ON HIM!!! SHAME!!!

Do you know the Sheriff of Roberson County will not let his Deputies work traffic control on Hwy 6. If he did this it would cut down on some of the wrecks.

yes its true my grandmother clipped the 18 wheeler but when your driving on any road your not just driving for yourself your driving for those who may run a stop sign or a red light or those who are under the influence of alchol or intoxicated so the 18 wheeler could have slowed down but there are alot of things that could have been done to change the accident if thats what the man upstairs wanted to happen things would be different

JODI: I READ THAT NONE OF THE VICTIMS HAD ON A SEAT BELT.YOU SEEM TO THINK THAT THE GRANDMOTHER HAD HERS ON.DID SHE? and does anyone know why or how she clipped the truck? did she swerve, attempt to pass, get distracted? just wondering. whatever the circumstances, a family has been torn apart, and that breaks my heart.many prayers need to be sent up for those who are left with the pain, and for the injured surviving child.

Why weren't these children in seat belts? Adults are supposed to protect the children. This is awful, and so unnecessary.

To those people talking about Troopers, the Troopers can't be behind the wheel for you, there is only 4 troopers assigned to Roberston County, usually they'll have 1 or 2 vacancies, meaning there is usually 2 to 3 Troopers to cover the entire county. slowing the speed limit might help, but as we have seen on hwy 6 between 159 and the Navasota river, it doesn't help, people still drive 80-90 in a 55 zone. Drivers need to be aware of their entire surrounding when they get behind the wheel. Stop trying to blame this horrible accident on the lack of Troopers being on the road, they can't be everywhere 100 % of the time. Seat belts might not prevent deaths but they sure increase the chances for survival.

Posted by: Cynthia Location: Bryan on Sep 26, 2008 at 09:01 PM
Just a note to those who wonder about the media coverage. By the time the cameras actually get on-scene most of the EMS and FF have already finished their job and are doing cleanup or have left the scene. The DPS are the ones that then go in and do the report. Many prayers and thoughts to the families involved and the personnel that worked the wreck.

I personally know all of the people that was in the accident and has lost their children. Just stop pointing fingers and begin praying for this family!!! The girl in the other white car going Northbound, is one of my best friends daughter and she was treated and released last night. God Bless

God bless EMS, Fire and Police personnel. I think your work to often becomes unnoticed and I cannot even begin to imagine what was going through your thoughts when you saw these children in such a horrible state. I know it is something you must deal with on a daily basis and will never understand how yall do it. I think I speak for everyone in saying you are appreciated. May god be with the families and loved ones of the deceased in the horrible accident.

My prayers are with the family and friends of all who were involved. But to all of you who think it is always the 18 wheelers who cause ALL the accidents on Hwy 6, think again. The car clipped the front of the truck, spun out. I see how most of the drivers drive in Texas and it is not pretty; no one knows how to merge, you always think you have the right of way. If people would take their time, be cautious and buckle up hopefully things like this wouldn't have to be so senseless.

Posted by: anonymous Location: Cameron on Sep 26, 2008 at 04:25 PM
Our prayers and thoughts go to all families involved. I beg to differ with some of the people say that the troopers need to work more! They need to get with the program! Our Troopers WORK there tails off and don't get the credit deserved! It is the adults responsiblity to make sure all kids are in car seats or seat belts! It is a LAW and needs to be practiced!! For everyone that thinks they need to work all these roads more they need to go apply to DPS. The troopers are pulled in every direction possible do you all realize how big the counties are and how much they have to patrol?? Why don't you do a ride along. Thank you to all EMS personal and Law enforcement for all you do! It is the people that need to pay more attention and obey the laws. GOD will heal..

To anonymous in Calvert: Yes it was first reported on the KBTX 6:00 news that the accident involved a mother and 3 children from Calvert who had died. Ted was right.

Posted by: Staci Location: Bryan on Sep 26, 2008 at 02:54 PM
First, let me say, my heart goes out to all invloved. This was a terrible accident that did not need to happen. This was not the driver of the 18-wheelers fault. The car driven by the family, clipped the 18-wheeler. People need to SLOW down everywhere, especially on that stretch of road. Is it really going to make a difference if you get there 10 minutes sooner? I don't think so. The driver of the 18-wheeler now has to live with this for the rest of his life. And what about the poor girl driving northbound, minding her own business? Hopefully, people see this story and will be reminded how quickly your life can be changed.

To Anonymous Re: Ted - Ted was correct. On the 10 pm newscast last night, the specifically said 3 children and their mother was killed. It was corrected this morning, but still caused a lot of worry for many.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 26, 2008 at 01:25 PM
This is so very sad. What makes it sader is how people start pointing fingers.Have you ever researched to find out how many state troopers are in one county at a time.Don't blame this on innocent men and women who leave there families behind every day to risk there lives for us. If anyone could have prevented this I think thaey would have.Maybe the roads are to narrowand maybe it took something so unforutnate like this before anyone would fix the roads, but to blame this on State Troopers not doing there jobs is wrong.Dont hate law inforcment you may need them one day.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 26, 2008 at 01:12 PM
Anonymous who flipped out on Ted, you really need to simmer down. They were reporting a mother and her kids. It was like that on here last night at 8:30 PM. Ted is right. But the reality is.... who really cares? The point of the matter is that this happened and the focus should be sorrow for the family, not a KBTX error between grandmother/mother. Seriously. What the heck is wrong with some of you?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Franklin on Sep 26, 2008 at 12:19 PM
Robertson County has been overrun by 18-wheelers due to the recent natural gas discovery. As a resident of Franklin who drove county roads everyday, I can honestly say that FM roads are too small for them to be on it. Now I know this accident did not happen on a FM road, but it still goes to show that you have to be so careful when driving these days. One slight turn off the wheel and lives can be forever changed. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these people. Please wear seat belts and drive with caution.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Hearne on Sep 26, 2008 at 11:43 AM
I have to agree with Jake in regards to the news footage. These troopers always get so much credit when the EMS, fire dept. play a big part in situations like this. If there would be more troopers monitoring this stretch of Hwy between Hearne and Bryan maybe this would not have even happened. I drive this road daily and very rarely see trooperw working this Hwy., it is sad the number of vehicles that go 80 and above on this road. This is sad sad for these families, may God bless you!!!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Calvert on Sep 26, 2008 at 11:37 AM

After the game, going through there to get back home, they were still doing the investigation. It is so traggic to see such preventalbe accidents like this. No seat belts? This is a reminder to us all, even if you are going a short distance, you must not put your children or someone else at risk. You never know who you will pass or be on the road with. PLEASE, please buckle up your kids. More importantly, if they're too small for a regular seatbelt, get a belt-positioning booster seat. Children should be 4'9'' (around 8 yrs and 80 lbs) before an adult seat belt will fit properly. Texas laws are severely lacking, allowing children too small to wear adult seatbelts. They're lives are in danger every time they get in a car - almost as much as not wearing a setbelt at all due to "seat belt syndrome" injuries. SafetyBeltSafe U.S.A. has developed a simple "5-Step Test" to see if a child is big enough to ride in a lap and shoulder belt combination: 1. Does the child sit all the way back against the auto seat? 2. Do the child's knees bend comfortably at the edge of the auto seat? 3. Does the belt cross the shoulder between the neck and arm? 4. Is the lap belt as low as possible, touching the thighs? 5. Can the child stay seated like this for the whole trip? If you answered "no" to any of these questions, your child needs a booster seat to ride safely in the car. Also, recent evidence shows that children younger than 15 should ride in the backseat unless you have no other choice (ie: truck) AND the airbag is disabled up front.

The station management should be ashamed of reporting that the deaths included a mother and her 3 children. Untrue. Why prematurely report this info when you don't have the facts and caused consternation for fathers in the BV who knew their families were traveling. Again, shame on you.

This is a terrible tragedy, I can only pray for the surviving family members to have the strength to carry on. I could not make it in this world without my children,

Even though I still believe govt shouldnt mandate the use of seatbelts. Its like saying you cant smoke because it will be bad for your health. The use of safety belts should be used at all times, especially for others like kids. They dont know any better. Although wearing seatbelts wont guarantee surviaval, it sure does give you a better chance of surviving. God Bless this family and loved ones.

I must say, that I am very sad about the tragic event that took place. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I just don't appreciate how all the news footage shows is the state troopers walking around. Why didn't they show the the real civil servants of the whole situation? The Fire Department, and the EMS team.

KBTX, I understand that ya'll think that you just have to be first with late breaking news, but why do you have to scare to death everybody who's loved ones were traveling that road tonight? What's wrong with just reporting that there has been a bad accident and to avoid this area if at all possible? Then, when next of kin have been notified and you have the story straight, you can run the story. In my opinion, that's what a responsible journalist should do. To the family and friends of the victims of this accident: You have been and will continue to be in my prayers as you go through this difficult time.

They were from Calvert, it was 4 children and there mother. Two of the children were in the 5th and 3rd grades, don't know about the others. Counselors will be at the Calvert Elementary school tomorrow to help the classmates of the children killed.

there's always accident on Hwy 6 and Hearne with 18 wheelers what DPS needs to do is drop the speed limit back down to 55mph and put more law enforcement or build another road just for 18 wheeler's we're the tax payers here something needs to be done to save peoples lives.
