President Bush's visit to Laredo drew a handful of local residents who stood in the hot border sun, many carrying American flags, waiting to greet the president.
They gathered in the Laredo International Airport parking lot yesterday but didn't get a chance to see Bush before he was whisked away to tour Laredo's sprawling Border Patrol headquarters.
The president stepped off Air Force One to greet a small group including Governor Rick Perry and Mayor Betty Flores.
Flores has long been outspoken about the toll illegal immigration and border violence has taken on border communities like hers. Yesterday, she said she was encouraged by Bush's guest-worker idea and his promise to beef up the Border Patrol.
