It's a mystery that has haunted Grimes County for nearly four years.

Carlos Rodriguez Jr. went missing on October 4, 2004, now almost exactly four years to the day new clues may provide insight into his disappearance.

"It was as if he just vanished," Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell said.

It's been four years since anyone has heard from Carlos Rodriguez. The then 18 year-old was last seen at his Grimes County house, but despite multiple leads investigators kept running into dead ends.

"That was always strange, why all these years no phone calls, birthday calls--nothing," Sowell said.

So on the anniversary month of his disappearance, investigators want to give one more look at an area of interest, the woods that begin just a few feet from Rodriguez's home.

The woods span hundreds of acres, that include thick brush, barbed wire, and several ravines.

"The whole area is wooded so you're looking at finding a needle in the haystack, trying to know where to look and what to look for," Sowell said.

News 3 was there as investigators stumbled upon that needle.

"Dale found a skull," one investigator said.

"We hear you, we're coming," another investigator replies.

Hours into the search authorities find what they've been looking for, a human skull. The discorvery is made about 200 yards into the woods.

"Coming through the thick woods here I glanced to my left and there it lay just out in the open," Dale Schaper said.

Minutes later....

"There are more bones over here," an investigator yells.

A pair of shorts, rifle, and bones are found just a few feet away.

"If this in fact is the individual we suspect it means closure for the family," Schaper said.

As investigators rope off the scene and gather up all the evidence, the Sheriff and his deputies deliver the news to the family.

"I had to tell them that we found what appears to be human remains," Sowell said "But I said it's not a match until it's a match."

The Sheriff's Office is stressing that remains have not been officially identified just yet. They say the Sheriff's Office is handling this case as a homicide case, until it's proven otherwise.

The remains will be sent off to a forensic lab in the Dallas area to positively I.D. the body and cause of death.

The Grimes County Sheriff's Office was able to identify another set of human remains found in Shiro just last week. The name of that individual has not been released.

Sounds like you have some information on this case that you need to report to the police

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 6, 2008 at 08:29 AM on Oct 7, 2008 at 04:13 PM
It seems that you are upset that someone may have called KBTX, ....do you know something on this case that no one else knows? Makes me think you have something to hide

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 7, 2008 at 04:13 PM
Do you?

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 6, 2008 at 05:34 PM
You would think so, Anonymous at 8:29 a.m., but I highly doubt it.

I'm with the majority on this one. Seems strange though, knowing how quick the Dale and Don show calls for the dogs when they think theres a wanted fugitive on the loose, but didn't use them here. Heck they've been known to cut people's fences to keep from climbing over through. But mostly it sounds staged for the election, as one person told me about the D.A. when asked why the d.a. didn't try for an indictment. His response was "He would never get reelected" remember this is Grimes County, plenty of skeletons where that one came from.

" I know KBTX is just doing their job but someone called them and tipped them off. Who was it?" Hey, all you conspiracy theorists, you might be right, but I suspect that this was just planned to be another of the "cold case" stories that KBTX runs every once in a while, where the authorities go back over old ground with the newsies watching to hopefully jog the memories of people in the area and generate some possible phone tips. Only in this case, they got lucky and stumbled across some real evidence in the process. And anybody who hasn't tried to find a feral hog or deer that they KNOW they hit good and solid out in those stinky bottoms, creeks, weeds, jupon, weisach and catsclaw has no business criticising the searchers for missing the body earlier, even if it wasn't buried.

No, sick and tired in Anderson, what IS sickening is that the news crew was there to begin with! Can you imagine how this young man's family must have felt when all those people with cameras or microphones showed up to their home?!!! It makes me sick. I know KBTX is just doing their job but someone called them and tipped them off. Who was it?

I think because it election time for county sheriff is why the news was there during the search, if the media is in Grimes county bet your bottom dollor Don Sowell will be there.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 4, 2008 at 03:38 AM
Yes, the body may have been buried at the time of death, and when investigators had searched the area, but remember "Trained" investigators would have noticed a patch of dirt that had been disturbed, but this is Grimes county sheriff dept. we are talking about, not a real department. Don don't hire any trained officers just rookies that can't outshine him, I know this first hand.

I thought the remains found outside of Shiro belonged to this person, what happened to that? Does Grimes county sheriffs know what is what or what they are really doing?

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 4, 2008 at 01:39 AM
Erica where the fire at i think u r over reacting here just abit their doing the best they can with what they had to work with ..they cant just up and make things happen even 4 years ant nothing i'v seen cases go on for 20 years then they get a break in the case you NEED to get a grip and shut up and let the cops handle it..

This has been on our hearts and prayers for four years. Those who knew Carlos and know the Medina family are filled with so many emotions right now. They are the sweetest people you will ever meet. Please keep them in your prayers and PLEASE--if anyone knows ANYTHING--PLEASE contact the sheriff's office. It could be any one of us with children in this situation. If you know anything, please contact the sheriff's dept. Thank you.

A horrible as it sounds.. Could it have been that.. the person responsible for this mans tragic death waiting until the investigation grew cold before he put his body there? Just food for thought? Don't blame the police is the point.. A crazy person is capable of anything!!

Posted by: Sick & tired Location: Anderson on Oct 3, 2008 at 11:30 AM
What people do not know is the Texas Ranger for this area, investigators at the sheriff's department, and the district attorney's office investigator have been working on this case and going back to it over & over again trying to get a break in the case. This exact piece of property was not searched previously. Other places in the vicinity where the boy had been have been searched repeatedly. This is a case these officers never let go & filed away as a "cold case". One would think the citizens of Grimes County would be pleased that law enforcement has hopefully been able to give the family, if the remains turn out to be him, some peace of mind. It is sickening that all everyone thinks about is politics when officers day in and day out quietly go about their business working crimes with no recognition, & horrible pay (I might add) to be attacked so viciously when they do the right thing & succeed!!!

The family needed closure. If you are not familiar with law enforcement don't be quick to judge. It is a 24-7 job, which I might add, a job well done. If you would stop and think, this has to have been on on-going investigation. Maybe Hurrican Ike helped pave the way and uncover evidence that would have otherwise remained buried forever. I give praise to all the agencies that assisted with the search and recovery of this missing person. As far as the Grimes County District Attorney's Office and Grimes County Sheriff's Department, there are not enough words to say how much you are appreciated. Thank you for a job well done!Don't be so quick to judge law enforcement until you have walked in their shoes.

so glad they searched deeper into those woods. Hopefully this will be closure for the friends/family. but, more remains were found in shiro last week? wow. i live right here and did not here about that. now, some were found a while back.....were the results in last week? I'm confused.

My thoughts and prayers are with this child's family. I have known them for many years and they are wonderful people. May God lift them up and hold them close in this time of need. I hope that this will give them the closer that they need. David and Sheila, I love you and I am praying for you.

None of this makes sense. They scoured this area with more people four years ago than they had THIS TIME! And why wasn't the family informed BEFORE the news came out? Why in the heck was the news crew even at the scene while they were searching? Also, the "sheriff" is up for re-election in November. We want to know more!!! Was the GCSO REALLY investigating because of the anniversary or was there a tip? There is more to this story than they are letting on. I know some things have to be kept quiet to find out what really happened but something's not right here and it's about time the truth comes out. That family deserves the truth. P.S. It only gets harder to find a body in the woods as time goes on because the brush will be thicker by now than it was 4 years ago.

Posted by: Erica Location: Bryan on Oct 3, 2008 at 09:23 AM
FOUR YEARS and they decide to get down and dirty to find a body. It would have been much easier to find a body days or weeks after this young man went missing due to smells. This is unbelievable! I can’t believe these people call themselves police much less investigators! With all the technology now days this is pure laziness. All these men and women had to do was ask for help from fellow officers in surrounding counties. I can’t believe I'm going here, but I am….If this was an officer’s son or a city council mans son, I am sure this would have been solved sooner than four years. This is very sad, and if I were a member of this department I would hang my head in shame!

It is a God thing people called a Miracle!!!! An answered prayer for the family looking for closure. This area was searched years ago and people of the community have never given up the search but the hand of God put a conviction on someone to look just one more time 4 years later and the prayer was answered. It may not be the outcome the family wanted because I am sure they would have much rather found him alive and for 4 years they have had to wonder what happened but God works in mysterious ways. Thank You Lord for not leaving us in our times of trouble instead you hear our prayers and comfort us as long as we put our faith and trust in you.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Iola on Oct 3, 2008 at 08:52 AM
Ok people think about it. The body was probably buried in a shallow grave and over the years animals dug up the body leaving the skull out in the open. Don't jump to conclusions until all the facts are in.

Posted by: anonymous Location: work on Oct 3, 2008 at 08:42 AM
People instead of finding fault and trying to point fingers why cant everyone just pray for the family who needs the closure of knowing where there child went. We cant change what has happened but we can pray for those that are left behind with the pain inside. And for those who cant do that why dont you go find a heavily wooded area and try to make your way thru it write down what you see but dont mark your trail, then go back tomorrow and do the same and I bet you see something different everytime. It is camo for natures wildlife and yes God made it this way it is not the police dept. fault.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 3, 2008 at 07:56 AM
You would think that even though they had to cut a path through the woods, the officers would have scoured the area in search of this person. I know the police departments in BCS have dogs. Why weren't they used in collaboration with Grimes County Law Enforcement?

Posted by: kh Location: bryan on Oct 3, 2008 at 07:27 AM
this area was searched 4 YEARS AGO! and they couldnt find anything? So they decide on the anniversery of his disapearance to go back and look again, and "hey, lets bring the news crew" , and they find him! sounds a Suspicious to me.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 3, 2008 at 01:54 AM
Did you watch the video? Its referring to the woodline being a few feet from the house not the remains. You can see someone on video having to cut a path just to get through the woods. I say job well done to the officers and hopefully a family can get some much needed closure.

Posted by: Dixie Location: bryan on Oct 2, 2008 at 10:16 PM
The woods just a few feet from the house? A skull right out in the open? And it took 4 YEARS?????
