We are back on pump patrol and prices have gone down in the area but suprisingly enough, we found a higher gas price!

At the Exxon on Welsh Avenue and Harvey Mitchell Parkway gas is $3.73 a gallon. That's 4 cents more than the previous high we found on Wednesday's Pump Patrol. We'd like to thank Larry Degelman for sending that in. And believe or not, folks are still pumping gas even though its $3.73.

But there are a lot of people getting gas at the Walmart on Briarcrest. At $3.41 a gallon, its the cheapest gas we could find here in B/CS. Our neighbors aren't paying quite as much though. In Tomball, just an hour away, they are paying $3.19 a gallon. In Austin they are paying $3.17 a gallon. In the Valley, you might not want to hear this but they are paying just $3.01 a gallon. Our good friends up in Oklahoma, $2.95 a gallon. The City of El Paso is on course with us at $3.40 a gallon, while Frisco and McKinney are paying $3.49 and up to $3.61 for a gallon of gas.

Now we want your feedback when it comes to Pump Patrol. Take a picture of expensive or inexpensive gas and we'll feature it here on Pump Patrol because we're looking out for you and we need to find cheaper gas prices here in B/CS.

all around town the average gas prices for unleaded are 2.99 per gallon, premium unleaded 3.19 per gallon, and for super unleaded 3.29 per gallon. I want to know why the ready 2 go gas station hasn`t bothered to lower their gas prices in the 1600 blk of south college? Their unleaded is covered and their premium is priced at 3.69 per gallon, their super unleaded is priced at 4.10 per gallon. I think they need to be asked why their gas is so high. Don`t you think so?

I just returned from Caldwell to visit a friend and before I left there I filled up for 2.97 per gallon! I get back to College Station and see anywhere from 3.39 to 3.48 per gallon. What is the deal here? UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!

I am a third generation native and business owner in BCS. It is sad to see local companies overcharging for gas, considering not less than 6 years ago we use to have some of the cheapest gas in the state , My company dose about two million dollars a year all local funds, but I can tell you it will not after this year I will be moving me , my family and my business to a area were companies do not rape its local citizens just because it can. oh ya my two sons will not be at a&m next year either . I know other business owners and families that feel the same way, I wonder how the Chamber of commerce explains our gas raping to potential citizens and businesses thinking about moving here. Like I said it is and will be a sad day for BCSp

Gas prices dropped from $3.39 to $2.97 at all stations in Centerville.

Another thing to note. I worked in Houston for about a year and the fuel with ethonol in it WILL do damage to older autos. We saw it on a daily basis where cars built mid to late '90's and before this fuel eats the seals out of the fuel injectors and in some cases, the seals in the fuel pump. Now I can't speak for every make, but, to replace fuel injectors is $1500.00 plus, and fuel pumps are five to eight hundred bucks. Not worth using this fuel if you own an older car.

Just a note, you might save a few cents here or there at the pump at places like walmart, sams, Heb, Kroger, etc., but the fuel that is sold at these places is so bad and the tanks in the grounds at these places are not maintained like the ones at the "big 5" that you actually will lose money with the lower fuel milage you will get. By using the premium fuel at one of the "big 5" you will get much better fuel milage and it will pay for itself. I work in the automotive industry and we ask out customers where they fill up and ask them to try other companies and report back to us. The "big 5" always rates better fuel milage. Plus, cleaner fuel out of the tanks, means more savings over the long run and less that you have to maintain on your cars over that time. It is a no brainer. Sometimes you get what you pay for. Cheap sometimes means CHEAP!!!

Why is gas here $3.69 and in Waco $2.89 or less? Greed. Nothing more. Price gouging for sure, or at least price fixing. Where is the AG's office?

"Also when you buy $100 worth of groceries at Kroger you get another .10 off per gallon." In practical terms it only saves you 0.07 per gallon, since to get the discount you have to have a Krogers card that ALWAYS gets you 0.03 off the posted price. But it IS still a good deal as long as you realize that the gas is a bit lower quality than Shell or Exxon.

To Anonymous at 7:34AM - you hit the nail on the head. It amazes me how much power Nancy Pelosi and our Democrat Congress have. Remember that when you vote - say NO to Chet Edwards (aka - Nancy's lapdog).

I went to Dallas this weekend and as I went thur Waco I saw gas at $3.05. I stopped there on the way back and filled up. Surprisingly, I found gas in Dallas a little bit cheaper than here. The cheapest I was was $3.31 the most expensive was about $3.67.

Also when you buy $100 worth of groceries at Kroger you get another .10 off per gallon. I use to think that Krogers was too expensive, but if you buy their Kroger brand products (which are very good) and only buy certain things at other stores it really benefits the pocket book. Gas is $3.11/gal but I only pay $3.01/gal. It really adds up. Hope someone can use this info!

Gas is now $3.09/gal!! Navasota AND B/CS are overcharging for gas! I have been driving back and forth across Tx this past mo and Did Not see $3.73/gal ANYWHERE but B/CS!

"Our goverment is sticking it to us, till a new president comes in it will stay that way." Actually, it wasn't the Prez who ran the price up, it was the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 that did the damage, courtesy of Pelosi and company... So do ya like the first installment of the "great changes" they promised when they took over Congress last year?

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 6, 2008 at 08:41 PM
I heard today that a barrel of oil now gos for $90.00 (give or take), then why is gas and diesel still over $3.00 a gallon??? Remember... last time oil was that low gas was under $2.00 a gallon. Our goverment is sticking it to us, till a new president comes in it will stay that way, lease till the new one gos out and it will be payback time again.

This thread is about our high fuel prices, not whether you can buy enough "36 to a package" paper towels and toilet paper, AND gas, to justify a $40 (so it's 333 gallons at $.12/gal!!)Sam's membership. Sam's sure hopes people don't think about it, when they renew each year. And the fact that if you have to drive out of your way to use your Sam's card, that's added expense. No doubt it's a good deal for some, but I'm thinking many a Sam's card owner never "saves" enough to cover the card cost. I hope KBTX continues to investigate, as the flimsy reasons for our higher local gas prices don't make sense. It takes some influence to set the price bar higher here than elswhere. The "trickle-down" of lower prices at some stations all likely relate to where the "major brands" are in pricing.

Posted by: Frugal on Oct 6, 2008 at 01:12 PM
Frugal, Assuming that if you pay for the membership of a sams card you would use it to purchase other things and SAVE money and not just use if for purchasing gas. That would be the Smart thing to do. So really if you paid the membership and used it to the full advantage, like shopping there, then you wouldn't just have to worry about buying a lot of gas to make up for that membership fee. It would kind of dumb to just have a membership there if all you would do is buy gas.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Taylor on Oct 6, 2008 at 08:50 AM
Gas in Taylor this morning 10/6 is 2.92 and if you get a gas card from Wal-Mart before you get gas at the pump it will be 2.89. Thats wonderful.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 6, 2008 at 07:17 AM
" All you have to have is a sams club membership card to access the pumps." And a yearly Sams Membership costs...?

Posted by: Frugal and smarter than Britney on Oct 5, 2008 at 01:49 PM
Britney: no one mentioned using a Sam's credit card. Unless you borrow someone else's Sam's card, the membership $$ results in the 290 gallons purchased (assuming a $.12/gal saving), just to recoup the card cost. Read it again, and do some math.

I just made a trip to the Lower Rio Grande Valley. On the way down, there was a steady decrease in pump prices until we got to Corpus Christi. There prices were about equivalent to here. The further south we traveled, the lowere the prices went alll the way down to Weslaco, TX where gas was $3.03. This price however may be driven from subsidized prices across the border in Mexico. This was an eye opener though. Maybe, just maybe the oil companies will allow the prices to go down well below the $3.00 mark.

Posted by: britney Location: bcs on Oct 4, 2008 at 09:14 PM
You don't have to use your sams credit card to get gas at sams. All you have to have is a sams club membership card to access the pumps. You can get a gift inside of sams or walmart while you are there. So there is no interest to pay. So, Frugal, you don't have to buy 290 gallons of gas just to recoup the cost of your sams's card.

Posted by: someone Location: bryan on Oct 4, 2008 at 09:02 PM
wal-mart has their gas prices at $3.34. get a gift card that you can use at the pumps outside and you save $0.03/gal. you don't even need a membership card (like sam's). that comes out to $3.31/gal. it's better than $4.00/gal. that we were paying.

BCS is worrying about high gas prices there, well....ya'll want to be like the "big city" well there you go. Deal with it.

Posted by: alan Location: college station on Oct 4, 2008 at 06:37 PM
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You KBTX!!!! Someone is finally getting the attention of the rip off gas stations. I still buy gas out of town and will continue to do so until the prices are right.

Just a thought on KBTX's recent attempt to be more 'community and gas-friendly to us, the Brazos Valley.' BE CAREFUL with that 'cheap gas.' It's often full of junk, gunk, water and fillers that are likely to do damage to your engine that'll cost more (in the long run) than you'll ever save on 'cheap' gasoline (do the math). For all cars, new and old, '93' octane is clearly the safest and cleanest-burning gas, long-term - in my opinion (also better for the environment for those who claim to care). Although it costs a few more pennies (or nickels per gallon which I know add up, yes), it beats engine gunk and build-up, hands down, over reduced engine performance, emissions, and wear and tear on the powertrain. Be careful Brazos Valley, and KBTX, car repair places LOVE for us to use that cheap gas! Thanks for allowing me to offer my 2-cents worth.

2.89 in franklin

Posted by: Frugal Location: Bryan on Oct 3, 2008 at 05:55 PM
Assuming $.12/gal saving (may be more or less), you have to buy 290 gallons of gas just to recoup the cost of your Sam's card. I'll pass on that deal...

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 3, 2008 at 05:01 PM
Why is the cheapest place in town still 5-7% higher than Austin and Taylor?

Posted by: Jamie Location: Bryan on Oct 3, 2008 at 04:25 PM
Sam's Club is 3.38 with Sam's card

Posted by: Sams customer Location: Bryan on Oct 3, 2008 at 04:22 PM
Got gas today at Sam's Club on Hwy 6 and Harvey $3.38/gallon. I think it is currently the cheapest in town. It pays sometimes to have a membership.

Posted by: john on Oct 3, 2008 at 04:09 PM
I got gas 3.34 at Kroger in College Station and a big smile to boot!!!

Posted by: David on Oct 3, 2008 at 03:40 PM
It amazes me that people worry so much about comparing gas prices. Who cares? Do people really drive out of their way to save a nickel a gallon. You might save a whole buck per week if you spend $75.00. Why don't we compare grocery store prices and see if we can save a buck there too.

Posted by: Bryan Location: Indiana on Oct 3, 2008 at 03:24 PM
Don't come to Indiana to buy gas! It's not pretty. Here's a funny site about gas prices. www.pumpy.us

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Cameron on Oct 3, 2008 at 03:04 PM
Better yet...$3.09 in Taylor

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 3, 2008 at 02:47 PM
If Larry in Bryan is right in the earlier PumpPatrol thread and the Ethanol Tax break is 20-30 cents per gallon, is there any way that KBTX could identify and separate out the stations that are getting the cheaper FlexFuel? I'm pretty sure that Tomball is, and maybe the entire 290 and I35 corridors (ie Brenham, Temple, Waco...) all the way to Austin, San Antonio and DalWorth?

Posted by: ricky Location: brenham on Oct 3, 2008 at 12:31 PM
come to brenham gas over here is $3.35

Posted by: m'ville Location: Madisonville on Oct 3, 2008 at 12:22 PM
Madisonville gas is currently at 3.55 i pray it will continue to go down.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Cameron on Oct 3, 2008 at 12:17 PM
How 'bout Texaco, Shell, and others at 3.29 in Temple.
