AUSTIN (AP) - A pilot project found more than 25 percent of
Austin area motorists are driving without insurance.
Now that program has been expanded statewide to crack down on
millions of drivers who flout the Texas mandatory insurance law.
TexasSure makes it more likely that those without liability
insurance for their vehicles will get a ticket.
The TexasSure computer database matches the names of all insured
drivers and their insurance companies with their license-plate
numbers and VINs.
Law enforcement officers who stop drivers for a violation or
motorists involved in an accidents can enter their VIN or license
plate number into the TexasSure database to determine whether or
not they have insurance.
Fines can range from $125 to $1,000 and multiple offenders can
be arrested.
The program is funded with a $1 fee all Texans pay when renewing
their vehicle registrations.

there auto should be towed and impounded the 1st time ,because if they writr them a ticket and let them drive off they could have a accident moments later and the will cause some one else to pay for it................................

If they are caught not having insurance, why would they be released to drive on OUR streets knowing they don't have insurance. What if they were to be involved in an accident immediately after being stopped and ticketed. Who is at fault then? The vehicle should be impounded immediately. Another thing, don't go near the Jockey Lot on weekends. Many of those people shopping or vending there are not legal and don't have a drivers license or insurance. Why doesn't INS raid this place one weekend to see what they can find. Trust me on this.

Paul is correct. A good portion of the premiums we pay are to cover damages by those that violate the law. What I want to know is why are they issued a ticket and allowed to drive away in uninsured vehicle? The car should be towed and when they can produce proof of liability insurance and a receipt for a paid ticket, they can have the car back. That's the way I see it.
