For the sixth straight day, gas prices have dropped across the Brazos Valley. However, they're still not where they need to be.

News 3 went back on "Pump Patrol" Tuesday and found out what a difference a week makes.

After just six days of patrolling the Brazos Valley pumps, prices are down about 40 cents. Last week News 3 found gas for $3.75 a gallon and Tuesday at Wal-Mart it was $3.32 a gallon.

It is still not as cheap as our neighbors in Austin, Waco, and Houston where they're paying just $3.00 a gallon.

"You got to expect it in College Station, everyone is out for the money here," a local resident said. "But you can't do too much complaining unless you want to drive to the nearest city."

It's not just other towns in Texas that have lower gas prices. John, a College Station resident, just got back from New Jersey where prices are even lower and you don't even have to pump your own gas.

"I'm just wondering why in that state where they have to have a service guy pump your car, how they can have lower gas prices," John said. "Maybe we just need to regulate it more."

But for some, gas at $3.35 is a bargain.

"It makes it a little easier," one consumer said. "I drive back and forth to Hearne everyday, so the more savings the better you know."
"This is nice right here," another consumer said. "I usually pay about $60 and this is $10 less right here. So yea, I'm noticing a difference."

As for the most expensive gas, News 3 found it at Checkers on the Corner of Holleman and Welsh where it's $3.59 a gallon.

Remember if you see a high or low gas price, take a picture of it and email it to us at pumppatrol@kbtx.com.

Look people, the wholesale price of gas changes every single day. It's not like cokes and candy bars. This means that every gas station is ALWAYS paying a different price for their gas. In the last 10 days, the wholesale price of gas has fallen about 80 cents. That means that one station may have paid $3.40 for their fuel, while another is paying $2.60. It's not a conspiracy, and the KBTX Pump Patrol has nothing to do with the recent price drop. Most gas retailers outside of B/CS LOSE money on gasoline sales. Maybe B/CS retailers are trying to make 10 cents per gallon. Is that wrong? The government, however, makes about 60 cents per gallon in taxes. Please review Exxon's largest quarterly profits in U.S. history, and then tell me who's making the money. Quit picking on the gas station owners who are just trying to stay in business, and worry about what's left of your 401-K value.

Finally, Madisonville has something worth while to have. gas at 2.95 a gallon at Mo&Jo's travel stop and across the street at Chevron.

I talked to my Dad in San Antonio this morning it is 2.99 per gallon there. In CA it is $3.31 pe gallon. At the Shell by Brazos Center it is still $3.57? What is up with that...that used to be the most reasonable pump in town? Did it change ownership? Somebody is out to make a buck off somebody in my book!!!!!!!! California is now cheaper gas than what I am paying....what is up with that?

Posted by: DES Location: Madisonville on Oct 10, 2008 at 04:09 PM
Why is it that oil is at $73 a barrel and we are still paying over $3 a gallon? Enouhg is enough, don`t you think?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Texas on Oct 10, 2008 at 10:36 AM
My mother got gas in Taylor the other day (Williamson County - 55 miles from Hearne) at $2.79. Prices need to start falling more in the area.

"There is no difference between gas at the 2 places..." Wrong; the difference is small, but it IS there and worth about 10 to 15 cents per gallon. Which is why I usually fill up at the Shell across the street from the Kroger on the bypass in Bryan, since their prices are usually about a nickel apart.

Stay in the Right lane and save money. If you drive in the left lane go with the flow.

Posted by: SN Location: BCS on Oct 9, 2008 at 05:16 PM
The Exxon station on the corner of Welsh and Harvey Mitchell had reg for 3.48 gal. I went to Kroger and paid 3.09 a gal using my Kroger card. There is no difference between gas at the 2 places...why such a price difference?

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK KBTX FOR PUTTING THE GAS STATIONS ON BLAST!! EVERY SINCE YOU HAVE DONE SO THE PRICES IN OUR TOWN HAVE DROPPED QUITE A BIT. IT JUST LET US KNOW HOW MUCH WE WERE GETTING RIPPED OFF AND PROBOBLY WOULD HAVE STILL BEEN PAYING FOR HIGH GAS IF IT WASNT FOR YOUR STORY. AGAIN THANKS AND KEEP OF THE GOOD WORK!!!

3.09 in Brenham today.

Posted by: Kim Location: Marquez, Texas on Oct 9, 2008 at 09:32 AM
I work outside of Marquez,Texas and purchase my gas in Marquez. There are two stores in Marquez both are selling gas at $379 per gallon. I wish someone could explain to me why you can drive 30 to 45 miles up the road and purchase gas 20 to 50 cents cheaper. This does not make any sense to me. And trust me these stores are VERY busy in the mornings. I just wish they would take their gas prices into consideration.

Posted by: Bypass Dodger on Oct 9, 2008 at 08:30 AM
Hey, you guys gripe about being ripped off, but you're still driving 80 and over on the bypass; slow down to something like the posted limits and you'll be AMAZED how much cheaper your trips get.

Posted by: Ole Ag on Oct 9, 2008 at 08:26 AM
What took you so long, KBTX? On trips home to SA, I have ALWAYS filled up in Bastrop on the way back in; it's been 0.10 to 0.25 cheaper there since the days when gas was $1.50... used to be even cheaper in Luling, but they've gotten 'spensive in the last couple of years.

Posted by: mary Location: carlos on Oct 9, 2008 at 07:58 AM
it is 3.06 at the Carlos Store in Carlos, TX

Posted by: Al Location: B/CS on Oct 8, 2008 at 10:17 PM
Gas in Waco $3.09 today.

Posted by: Duff Location: CS on Oct 8, 2008 at 08:31 PM
Just made a trip through Buffalo, TX and prices on one side of I-45 were 3.05 and on the other side the price was 3.35...within 300 yards of each other!

Filled up in Thorndale for 3.14 today; Further from Hearne compared to BCS, not on a major highway, yet lots cheaper than here. Yes, I filled up before I left - and I agree, always fill up before you get back into town if you are on the road. Like Marc says below, Exxon says they have to reduce the prices because people are not showing up like they used to. The power is with the station owners and the wholesale/terminal prices are most impacted by the distributors, not Big Oil. This is a local and regional (county) greed thing, not Big Oil thing. Take the time and fill up out of town if you ever go any direction - send a message to local stations and their suppliers: "WE'RE TIRED OF BEING RIPPED OF AND WE KNOW YOUR GAME!!!!"

Posted by: Consumer of Gas Location: College Station on Oct 8, 2008 at 03:22 PM
The gas at the Shell at Texas & William J. Bryant is $3.24!!!

Thank you so much KBTX for your efforts through "Pump Patrol". It's absolutely amazing the difference a week has made and I hope that making an example out of the stations that continue to take advantage of people will continue to lower our gas prices. I believe it will increase customers for those complying and eventually the greedy gas station owners will have to go down. THANKS AGAIN KBTX!! YOU ROCK!

Talked to a clerk at a Exxon in CS. Clerk says" Ever since that channel 3 started putting our prices on tv, fewer people are getting gas here. We had to bring it down. We're still making plenty of money though."

Posted by: Lynne Location: Bryan on Oct 8, 2008 at 12:39 PM
Just came back from San Antonio this morning. Gas was 3.13 along I35 and 2.99 in Bastrop. WHAT'S UP IN B/CS????

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 8, 2008 at 12:29 PM
I'd sure like to know the Rack price at Hearne; that'd give us a real feel for how much of this is a Station/distributor problem and how much is an oil company issue...Maybe KBTX could see if that's somehow public knowledge through the RRC, since the delivery is by pipeline.

Checkers (gas station at Holleman and Welsh) is ALWAYS really, really high. I don't understand why people buy it. They can drive up the road to HEB and get it for 20 cents cheaper!

Posted by: Tim Location: College Station on Oct 8, 2008 at 09:42 AM
I Conroe yesterday it was $3.15 a gallon! What's up???

Posted by: Tanya Location: CS on Oct 8, 2008 at 08:11 AM
We're getting ripped off in b/cs and someone should be answering for this. My parents live in upstate NY where gas is usually 20-30 cents MORE than here....this morning they had it for $3.27??? It's just ridiculous!!!!!!!

Posted by: LW Location: Bryan on Oct 8, 2008 at 08:09 AM
Seems there maybe some difference between Longhorns and AGGIES after all. Who is smart enough to not buy high priced gas.

Posted by: frank Location: tomv\ball on Oct 8, 2008 at 07:36 AM
2.92 in tomball

"You got to expect it in College Station, everyone is out for the money here," a local resident said. "But you can't do too much complaining unless you want to drive to the nearest city."... Take home lesson: When you get the chance and are traveling, always, always fill up before you get into B/CS. Unless you reduce demand, the local stations (and regional distributors) will always put the screws to us... always.

Dear Anonymous,How long have you been ripping us off? Do you own a Shell Or Exxon station? Sounds like your whining now. Just paid $3.15 at Walmart in Hewitt. Thank You and Please keep up the great work KBTX!!!!!

Hey Anonymous, Nobody NEEDS Starbucks, everybody NEEDS gas! Thanks KBTX, keep it up! I'll go wherever I need to in order to get cheap gas! Then I'll go inside and by a soda with my extra cash! cha ching!

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 7, 2008 at 05:48 PM
Star bucks (or 8 Bucks as i like to call it) is not a necessity like gas! Gas was in the $2.70's the last time oil was at this price per barrel. We're getting ripped and thats the bottom line!

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 7, 2008 at 04:22 PM
"For the sixth straight day, gas prices have dropped across the Brazos Valley. However, they're still not where they need to be." How does KBTX know where they need to be? Most fuel terminals have allocations in place for wholesalers and once the Hearne terminal runs out of fuel, then the wholesalers have to travel even further (Waco, Austin and Houston) to get fuel. Add extra travel time and expense (repair/maint to the tanker truck, cost to pay the employee which will likely turn into OT and the fuel used to get the fuel)to the price and it seems fair to me. Most of the gas stations are locally owned and operated by families and we struggle just like the next guy. Just tired of all the whining about gas when nobody whines about the prices at Starbucks!

Now KBTX, you can ask why the PROPANE prices aren't falling also. Hurry Winter is cooming !

Posted by: Matt Location: Austin on Oct 7, 2008 at 03:35 PM
Paying $2.87 a Gallon in North Austin. I'm from b/cs and was there just last weekend. To see what they are doing at the pump out there to people is just rediculous. You can always check out www.gasbuddy.com for the cheapest prices.

Posted by: Daniel Location: Bryan on Oct 7, 2008 at 03:13 PM
I just got back from Lake Charles and on the way back gas prices ranged from $3.15 to $3.25 from Orange to Cleveland. What's going around here???

Posted by: Angela Location: College Station on Oct 7, 2008 at 02:51 PM
Just paid $3.29 at Sam's!

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 7, 2008 at 02:32 PM
It SHOULD drop - it's down in the $80.'s per barrell, almost half of what it was this summer.
