There aren't too many Aggies who get more face time than Roland Martin, but his is a face that isn't a stereotypical Ag. That very fact is something the CNN contributor, radio host, author and columnist is hoping will change.

He says he's not a jewelry guy, but Roland Martin always wears two rings on the air and off -- a wedding band and his Aggie ring.

"A lot of people ask me all the time, 'man, how in the world did a black guy from Houston decide to go to Texas A&M,'" Martin said Saturday at his induction in the Former Journalism Students Association Hall of Honor. "I said, 'Because of what it stood for and what it represented.'"

The cultural landscape of Texas A&M was surely quite different when the 1991 grad was earning his journalism degree. He vividly recalls telling people he made it from Houston to College Station on a scholarship. It was an academic one, but people would ask him what sport he played.

"I want people to look at the reality that you can be an African American student, you can be Hispanic, you can come to this school and not play football or basketball," Martin said.

In its efforts to diversify, A&M appears to be scoring this decade. While statistics show white enrollment has stayed statistical steady, all minority categories have risen, including two targeted categories. Since 2002, the black-non-Hispanic category is up 48 percent, and the Hispanic student totals are up 57 percent.

"We are not going to stop until we get to a point where we really, truly reflect the face of Texas," said A&M President Elsa Murano, "and we're very excited about many efforts that we have underway that I think are going to help us to do that very quickly."

If reflecting Texas is the goal, there is still a ways to go. The latest Census Bureau numbers are from 2006, when just under half the state's population was white. At A&M that fall, three-fourths of students enrolled were white.

The university was well below state averages for African Americans and Hispanics.

The school's goal is one Martin shares.

"First of all, from the moment I graduated, I've been in contact," Martin said. "I've worked with every university president since I've left. Last year, I actually wrote a letter that they sent to other students. I'm actually going to be shooting a video."

Video and columns and books and opinions are what Roland Martin is becoming known for nationwide, though if he and his family has their way, it won't take that to keep a family tradition alive.

"I have nine nieces and four nephews, and all of them have other Aggie gear," Martin said. "All of them have walked through this experience. We made it perfectly clear that as many of them are going to be future Aggies as well."

Martin's brother and sister are also Aggies.

Texas A&M has touted this year's minority freshmen as the largest group ever to arrive on campus.

Hey, among 45,000 people, there are bound to be a few morons (some of them maybe even scholarship recipients) who have the ability to actually type on a computer. Personally, I have never had any problem with a person's race UNLESS they choose to make an issue of it, in which case I have a BIG problem with it. I hate affirmative action and other "diversity targeted" programs because of one black back in the late 70s who told a Prof in public that he didn't have to do the classwork like everyone else BECAUSE he was AA and if the prof didn't like it he'd have the prof fired (I never saw Ron again after that outburst; the Dr A retired in 92...). OTOH, I lived with a black roommate for a semester, and what little I know about architecture I learned listening to him tutor white kids in our dorm room some evenings. Don't know if Darryl got in AA or not, but he didn't try to stay in by trading on it. So does it make me a racist because I have problems with Ron, but not with Darryl?

Thank you DW for being a voice of reason.

Good post "White Democrat". I have to agree with you, seems like when an Aggie is spotlighted who is not white, the racist rhetoric comes out. I watch Mr. Martin's stories and commentary all the time and I have to admit that I would have never thought that he was an A&M grad. For those out there bashing the man, you should know that he is an Evangelical Christian and not Islamic. A&M is not a place of diversity and will not be as long as the only people of color you Aggs embrace are athletes on your teams. Maybe it does not suprise me that Roland Martin does not talk about his almater on air.

So if you're a conservative then you're racist? I did not know that. Typical of a "white democrat" to make such a hypocritical remark. Keep 'em coming. You words don't affect me. I think you're the comedian on here. For the record, I believe in equality for ALL and race should never be a deciding factor in who receives what. I guess that makes me racist, huh? David from Dallas on 10/13 at 8:22, I loved your comments.

A lot of HATE flowing from many of you "tolerant" types. As a matter of fact I do watch CNN (when I have to) and I've NEVER SEEN THE GUY! And while we're at it, the type of "diversity" you progressives promote is a complete FRAUD! And I know very well of what I speak. It will be interesting reading the enlightened types speculating about my race so they can marginalize me. Hypocrites!

I would hope that some of the rhetoric of nearly racist margin is from wannabe comedians. Sadly - SADLY - I fear that this is what will become the legacy of TxAM and their conservative affiliation. You know, the Brazos Valley has been here and evolved and diversified before the pond scum of "rich white folk" turned A&M into the global restroom it has become. This is a great time to be alive and we have to make this area the great place that it can be. That means every time you see some frat daddy with tobacco dripping down his chin wagging a drink and talking caveman smack you treat him like the afformentioned waste of protoplasm that they are. I hate to rant like this but I have had enough. Roland Martin is the the type of legacy TX A&M needs to embrace. He is the freshest voice on mainstream media today and I have to admit I just learned from this newstory he is an Aggie. Amazing

MCG, all those whom belittle Roland Martin, need to get a life!

Posted by: Roger Location: Texas on Oct 13, 2008 at 05:05 PM
So is a child born to a black person and a white person black or white? Is a child born to a hispanic person and a white person brown or white? In Texas no race accounts for as much as half of the population so Texas is a majority minority state. Why do mixed race children not count? Why is a student with a skin other than white more important than a white student? The real crisis is that there are too few places in college for all those capable of doing the work so rationing is being done. Another crisis is that mixed race children can only learn about half of their background depending on what color skin they end up with or how they are classified so they get the raw end of the deal. If you place men and women together they are going to remain together regardless of their skin color and if they have children their future is limited under the current plan. Should children have to choose a life based on their mother's non-white color? Is a non white family structure better for them?

When I read the headline I immediately thought of Roland Martin the fisherman...and for the life of me I could not understand why he was talking about diversity instead of fishing! Anyway, I try to stay away from televised news as much as possible. I can't stand the way every single news agency has to inflect their own personal opinion and attitude. I'd rather read it for myself and draw my own conclusions. And if the fact that I don't know who this guy is bothers you, well I don't know what to tell you. But, just because someone watches another program or doesn't know who this guy is, doesn't mean that they are bad people or should be called names!

I have never heard of this man but good job to a fellow Ag!!! Why are we not all in support of this person? That is crazy that there are such ignorant people that would say something negative, just because...........? Idiots!! Good job Mr. Martin, keep giving all Ag.'s a good name.

Surely Elsa Murano's "face of Texas" does not refer to the thousands of illegals who have no business influencing current TAMU admissions policy. Grades, not skin color, should determine who gets accepted.

Posted by: Aggie12 Location: Walton Hall on Oct 13, 2008 at 03:24 PM
To "Jim Bob", if you would come out of the dark ages or the hills where you live for a moment you would know that the man is an Evangelical, conservative Christian, but because you are a back woods idiot you did not know ore research anything on man. Next time do some reseach on the background of a person before you open your mouth and confirm inbreed hillbill that you must be.

DW, I will agree with you on one thing. I am a American who is Black and I do not like the term "African American" because I feel that I am an American who happens to be Black and I want all the rights that go to ANY and ALL Americans. Nevertheless, I do not have a problem with those who want to call themselves that. With that said, your comments are still racist. Just because you do not listen to the guy does not mean that he is not sharp because he is. No matter what you may think about him, you do not know what factored into him getting a scholarship to A&M. For that matter have you looked into every factor that white students get scholarships? I assure you white student get scholarships to A&M as well, not all you them pay out of their pockets. And since the school is over 65% white, I can only assume a greater number of whites have scholarships over the minority population. Again DW, pull that white sheet you have on all the way over your eyes so you can see better.

We need Dr. Gates back in a bad way. Elsa Murano needs to go now!!! She is a disgrace to all Aggies.

Great article. Roland Martin is a tremendous resource for the university. Simply put, he's been on TV for a longer period of time to a larger audience than any other Aggie ever. And yet some of you still belittle him.

Posted by: Anaonymous Location: CS on Oct 13, 2008 at 01:56 PM
I've never heard of him, but I wouldn't watch CNN if it was the last option! And if Elsa wants to "truly reflect the face of Texas" I guess she eneds to start accepting all the illegals that apply, also. What ever happened to accepting students based on academics and service? To say that race is not a factor when applying...that is very much a lie. If you check the 'white' box under ethinicity, you already have a strike against you because it would 'make the University look racist'. Whatever! Why do we refer to them as 'African-Americans' anyways? What ever happened to just being American?? They were not born in Africa, they were born in America. Just because someone's heritage is Irish or German, we don't refer to them as Irish-Americans or German-Americans. We are all Americans, and the sooner people start referring to others that way, this whole 'diversity' BS will all go away.

to jbb: is he really a nobody because he is an educated BLACK man? to James E: turn it on CNN.

Hmmmm,,,,This brings up the Aggie Assurance Program that was the headline during the last week or so. I would like to see thr "race ratio" for that program of who gets free tuition because their parents salary is under $60,000 a year. "Attetion all white people. Please move to the back of the bus!" We might as well call the reverse discrimination attorneys now. We'll be needing them. Gig'm TAMU. Who is checking to see how many whites & hispanics there are at Prairie View A&M? And do they have to abide by the same diversity rules?

Nationally known where? Islam Nation.

Posted by: JoeW Location: Walton Hall on Oct 13, 2008 at 11:28 AM
Typical ignorant Aggie responses from James and jbb. The guy is very well known in news circles as well as a award-winning journalist. If you watched something more than your beloved football team getting the hell beat out of them by every team they play maybe you would be more informed.

Posted by: scc Location: CS on Oct 13, 2008 at 10:52 AM
Actually, he is very frequently on CNN as a political contributor...anyone around here ever flip from Fox News???

Posted by: Robert Location: Davis on Oct 13, 2008 at 10:40 AM
The first two posters need to "get out more". Roland Martin appears on CNN.com every week and is on CNN TV almost every day. A&M should be proud to count him among its graduates. I certainly don't always agree with this views, but I respect the thoughtful manner in which he expresses his opinion. I believe it is helpful to hear what others have to say, even if you don't agree with them. Many of his columns, both on TV and the internet, have made me stop and think about my positions on several important issues, and while his writings did not change my mind, they did cause me to more clearly formulate my own opinion on certain topics.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 13, 2008 at 10:29 AM
For "James E" and "jbb", I'm assuming you people are white....maybe you should tune into the news more often.

I am excited that we have more minority students attending the univeristy, but I appreciate how Dr. Gates encouraged the best and the brightest to attend. We want quality not just quantity of all backgrounds. Let's continue to encourage good students and leaders from all backgrounds to attend A&M. In my opinion, race is only one level of diversity, but often times is the only one outsiders measure. Why is everyone so concerned with the Black and Hispanic population to ingnore positives such as the Chinese, Indian, and other "minority" populations that thrive at A&M and even exceed the population statistics? Give credit where it is due also. I am excited Martin is geeting the word out to so many new people that A&M is a very special place that will respect their cultures and welcome them for what they can add to our culture. We need all the bright minds and leaders we can find. Thanks and Gig'em.
