You might not be feeding your cat much, but if you're not making sure it's getting enough exercise, say hello to blubber.

I love how everyone gets defensive about their fat animals as if they, the owners, are not responsible. Wake up, most animals are not naturally fat!

To: "Pointless Contest" I found your comment so entertaining! I've been laughing about it all morning! HaHa! Good stuff, you should consider a career in stand-up comedy!

This is a pretty disgusting contest. Can we have a contest for obese children too? Would that be as funny? Raising an obese pet and raising an obese child are not that different...

The cat I know that is overweight is because she has a thyroid problem not because they over feed her and or she over eats. It's the opposite. She gets 1/2 cup of food twice daily. Plus she's old.

Cop1, I love the name of your cat, Fartenheimer, LOL) and also I agree with your statement, because I had a fat dog, ( no Misty wasnt fat because she ate too much, or ate the wrong food) Misty was a 18 pound Chihuahua that was fat because she had a thyroid condition, so PET LOVER WHEN YOU SAID THAT ALL OVERWEIGHT PETS WERE FAT BECAUSE THE OWNERS DIDNT CARE, YOU WERE WRONG! Misty went to the vet everytime she was ill!

My cat is fat. He has been fed nothing but Purina cat food, 1/4 cup twice a day his whole life. I cannot make him exercise. They don't have cat gyms or cat treadmills. He will not even eat people food. One thanksgiving I tried to treat him with a little piece of turkey and he looked at me like I was stupid for putting anything other than his cat chow in his bowl. Amy, do you actually think someone could fatten a cat up in two weeks enough to win that contest? It's not like they said the contest is in six months. Cats are not mindless creatures that eat everything you put in their bowl each meal. Each of my cats get 1/4 cup in the morning and in the evening. When I go home for lunch, they BOTH have food still sitting in their bowls. One is overweight and one isn't. Where does it say that the Animal Shelter has anything to do with this? It says America's County Store in Wellborn. That is not a animal shelter, they sell animals not adopt them out or rescue abused ones!

Are they really serious some animals are not fat by choice. Some have medical conditions like mine.We have spent lots of time, and money trying to find out what was wrong.Guess what nothing! He is very healthy, and loved by family, friends, and most of all his vet. He is very playful, and he needs to get the same opportunity, just like any skinny cat's in any contest.(So I don't know where people get off by saying this is animal abuse). sincerely, true pet lover p.s. I'm a size 6

any suggestions to fatten my cat? high carb diet? it worked for me

Posted by: Linda Location: Bryan on Oct 15, 2008 at 10:53 AM
All of you bleeding hearts need to get a life!! Just because an animal is obese does not mean he/she is over fed or abused as one suggested. I have a lab that is huge and have had her checked from head to toe....no thyroid problems, nothing, just big. My female cat was spayed in June and has gained 5-8 lbs. She looks like a balloon with a head. She was thin before she was spayed. I am thinking of entering her into the contest. Does that make me a bad person....don't think so!

The contest is bringing awareness and education. The contestants are given free reduced fat cat food. I think PetLover is missing the point COMPETELY. Can imagine...a community bashing for fat cats. This is a method of educating and encouraging proper car of your cats in an accepting way. Rather than being accusatory or hostile.

Pet Lover, Not all pets are fat because we don't care about their health and welfare. My cat is FAT not because we don't care, but because he is 19 years old and does not act like a kitten any more. He does not eat alot, and has a check up every time he gets a sniffel or once a year! So I belive my cat (Fartenheimer) is very happy, very healthy, and is going to remain fat and happy. Pet Lover,I bet you and your pets are in perfect condition!!!!?

relax pet lover. do you really think that everone is over weight because they want to be as well as thier pets

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 15, 2008 at 10:10 AM
Great, let's encourage fatness!!!!

Posted by: Amy Location: Bryan on Oct 15, 2008 at 10:09 AM
There's nothing more prestigious than an obese cat....I am ashamed that an animal shelter would honor bad habits. Because of this contest, I can guarantee you some morons are at home right now pouring extra Fancy Feast in Precious's crystal food dish, fattening her up for the big win. Animal abuse?

Posted by: Pet Lover Location: Bryan on Oct 15, 2008 at 08:21 AM
By all means, let's make sure that we recognize and honor the people who don't think about their pet's health and welfare. Sickening contest!
