One person is dead following an accident on Highway 6 Wednesday morning, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The accident happened around 10 a.m. between Hearne and Bryan.
Three vehicles were involved, including an 18-wheeler, and one man is confirmed dead, DPS troopers said.

Previous reports indicated there were more than one fatality, but authorities confirm only one person was killed in the crash.

The accident was cleared around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon; all lanes were re-opened to drivers.

I drive for a living and i go through hearne at least 3 to 4 times a day i see it all. I see police, speeders, tailgaters, kids running around in the back seat, talking on the phone, not paying attentoin, cars in bad shape,no turn signals, ect. Everyone has to make the effert to do their part to drive safe and to report bad driving.

DO NOT BLAME THIS OR ANY OTHER ACCIDENT ON THE LACK OF LAW ENFORCEMENT!!We all have seen Troopers on south Hwy 6 going to Houston, they, along with the Constables, are always out there, yet there has been sveral fatalities in the last couple of years. People know there is Law enforcement in the area and the speed imit is 55, yet they still drive 70-80 mph. Unfortunately, accidents happen because, like a lot of people have said, of human error. People have to be aware of their surroundings and they have to slow down!!

there should be more patrol on highway 6.that is the road of the killing.

Accidents will happen, regardless. Driving is a privilege, not a right. Testing needs to be increased and intensified. Drive defensively and slow down. Too many people in a hurry to go nowhere.

Come on folks wake up. It is not the construction, it not not the road, it is only one factor; human error. I work in emergency services and it is seen all the time.

There are 3 TX DPS troopers that live in my neighborhood in Hearne, so no they all don't live Franklin.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 17, 2008 at 03:39 PM
I WORK RIGHT OFF HIGHWAY 6 EVERYDAY AND SEE SEVERAL PATROL VEHICLES DAILY...IT'S THE ROAD CONSTRUCTION TO BLAME! IF THERE WERE ANY LANES INDICATED WITH PAINT AND EVEN ROADWAYS THIS MAY NOT HAVE HAPPENED!

Can someone please tell me who it was that died in that wreck? I haven't heard anything. Thank you!

My thoughts and prayers go out to every one involved.

Robertson County Sheriff's Dept. and Texas DPS only patrol around Franklin and Bremond. Could that be because the deputies and DPS officers live in those cities and nowhere else? What a shock!!! People don't slow down on Hwy 6 because there is absolutely no law enforcement on both major highways that traverse the county, Hwy 6 and Hwy 79. Somebody needs to ask why we have SO deputies, DPS troopers, and two full time patrol constables in the county, yet you never see them in action, much less patrolling?

the man killed in the accident was one of the only grandpas i have ever had in my life. thank you for the ones praying for our family.

Nothing wrong with the roadway. Human error is always a factor in every accident. Human error with an added combination of rain and heavy rain at times is what causes such tragic accidents. If you would eliminate the human error YOU WILL eliminate these terrible accidents.

I drive that stretch of Highway Monday through Friday, and you have to be a defensive driver. People need to pay attention. Barriers are not the answer, a waste of highway funds, and months of road construction. Take responsibility of having a DL, put the phone down and drive, don't worry about the CD you just dropped and drive. Stop doin one of the 10 - 15 other things we all try to do while we drive and pay attention.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family, thanks for the HEARNE FIREFIGHTERS.They are always prepared and ready to do a needed service, thanks ladies and gentlemen.Enough cannot be said said for you,but thanks alot!

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. SLOW DOWN EVERYONE! Even here is BCS it is amazing how fast people drive on the bypass. The speed limit is posted for a reason! You are putting not only your life in danger but everyone elses when you drive reckless and especially in the rain or on ice.

What have we got to do in Robertson County to get road barriers?? WHAT??? HOW MANY MORE HAVE TO DIE???????????

Posted by: Snoopy Location: Doghouse on Oct 16, 2008 at 06:56 AM
Hang up the cell phone. Laura, if you want major city services, move to a major city. (People already complain about taxes, but neither technology nor people come for nothing.)

By now, we have heard the name of the victim and knew him, although the media has not said it yet. I am just shocked to hear of this terrible thing and so very sad for the family. They have always had trouble on this highway. Speed, crossing into the wrong lane, a momentary lack of attention, etc. There used to be lots of highway patrolmen along the road and it still happened. Someone once said that Highway 6 is lined with crosses where peole have died.

Posted by: sad Location: hearne on Oct 16, 2008 at 02:08 AM
i live in hearne and work in bryan. we have had more than our share of fatalities between these two cities. most of the time it is not the "speeders" causing the problems. ALL drivers PLEASE drive defensivly. All it takes is a split second and your life could be over. my heart goes out to the family.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 15, 2008 at 11:49 PM
The problem is this. The DPS are only looking out for speeders and people without setbelts. What they need to be looking out for the bad drivers. The ones who tailgate, weave in and out of traffic, do not use signals to indicate lane changes and so on. In other places in Robertson Co., people also tend to pass in no passing areas. It would also help to pass laws against driving while texting. I've seen pictures of a poor kid cut in half because he was texting while driving and ran smack into a semi. Lastly, I've seen my fair share of vehicles that should have never made it past vehicle inspection and yet there they are going down the road.

TO: PAUL, I don't know when you are driving on HWY 6 between Hearne and Bryan but I drive it everyday and there are never DPS troopers on this road. You are not on the same HWY 6 I am on. We need more DPS on this road and yes people need to learn to slow down when it rains!!! God Bless the Lastor family!!!

Posted by: Angelina Location: Franklin on Oct 15, 2008 at 08:19 PM
I was there a second after it happened this morning on my way to Houston. There was another accident in virtually the same area on my way back from Houston at about 7pm. People need to slow down when it rains here. My prayers go out to the families involved.

It's not just between Bryan and Hearne, the death zone continues north on Hwy 6 up toward Reisel. I drive this road every single week day and can make a couple of observations: most people seem to be driving at or near the speed limit and reasonably carefully; there are probably as many or more 18 wheelers on this road (also going 70 mph) as there are other vehicles and they are often involved in these fatal accidents; and third, there are several cross roads and gas stations or stores where cars are entering or crossing the highway and there are no signs on the highway warning traffic to slow down or watch for entering/crossing traffic.

I live in Hearne and go to TAMU so drive it daily...I've used the Old Hearne dirt back-way several times because of accidents with total closures. So way to school, there was this accident. Way home, ANOTHER accident going north on 6, around 6 pm. Involving a trailer. I think the biggest problem is the number of tractor trailers and horse/cow trailers with trucks. Commercial traffic is super high, the road isn't that dangerous.

My prayers are with the Lastor family. I knew Mr. Lastor well.. God be with them

What is up with that part of Hwy 6? It seems like a death zone....can't be because of lack of Police, DPS is on that road all the time...thoughts and prayers to the victim's family

I passed by this accident on my way home. May GOD be with the family.

THIS IS SO SAD! It is so hard to hear about these things on a rainy day. Hwy 6 towards Hearne is so scary when it rains. I pray for the family.

I was headed North on 6 and came up on this accident shortly after it happened. It was the worse accident I have ever seen - and I wanted to call and warn people, but I'm not sure how. I tuned my radio to 1690am and there was no announcement of this accident and cars were still headed North at very high speeds. Any advice on where to provide/receive up-to-date traffic updates?

People....SLOW DOWN on the roads! What is it going to take????
