All he wanted was a free month's rent. Instead, a Texas Tech student may find himself suiting up for the football team.

Matt Williams, who recently transferred to Tech from Tarleton State, was picked to take part in a kicking contest during a Tech game a few weeks ago. First prize was a month's free rent, which Williams won by successfully booting a 30-yard field goal.

As Williams was walking back to his seat in the stands, he was flagged down. "They relayed a message to me saying that Coach (Mike) Leach wanted to talk to me," said Williams.

After the meeting, the two parted ways, but Leach didn't forget Williams. And with the team's recent kicking woes -- two kickers missing six extra points and half of their field goal attempts -- the coach is seriously considering suiting up Williams for Saturday's game against No. 18 Kansas.

"He's got a real good shot," said Assistant Coach Clay McGuire. "Only Mike Leach could bring a guy out of the stands and make it work."

Actually, Tech did a better job with this than A&M did. Williams actually played, Gill just stood by. Let's not forget that Williams was perfect too!

Get over yourselves please. Atm may celebrate this as its tradition but that doesn't mean no one else hadn't done it without crying out for attention as atm has with it. Good for you for having a tradition, big deal. You do not own the idea, nor its use. All schools have traditions, just atm tries hard to sell its', because it is TRADITIONALLY awful on the playing field. Another blaring example of deflection. Deflecting the reality of not having a team of success. You keep believing, and the rest of America will keep being entertained by your ignorance.
