A McCain campaign volunteer from College Station accused of making up a story about being robbed and attacked in Pittsburgh by a man angered by the McCain sticker on her car will enter a program for first-time offenders.

Under the deal announced in court Thursday Ashley Todd, 20, will be released from jail and required to undergo mental health treatment.

Her record eventually will be expunged as long as she goes to treatment, stays out of trouble and keeps authorities up to date on her whereabouts.

Todd has been jailed since Oct. 24, after police say she admitted making up a story about being robbed near a Pittsburgh bank and then assaulted a man who scraped a backward letter "B" into her cheek.

Todd, who was charged with making a false police report, did not have to enter a plea.

Police say Todd couldn't explain why she invented the story.

I hadn't followed the story after the first reports. Ms. Todd's astounding stupidity, scratching the 'B' backwards seemed to me to be the end of it. So I was a bit shocked that she was from College Station. I may even have seen her at a Ron Paul meeting--they later kicked her out (according to Boingboing). At the time of this incident, she was employed by a 527 organization (College Republican National Committee). I don't think they had any culpability/knowledge of this act, but their human resources dept. seems to be lacking. I agree with the post from 'american women' in their comparison to the Duke Lacrosse rape case, to which I add the 1987 Tawana Brawley case. But unlike these cases, I believe the organization connected (CRNC) was not engaged in race-baiting. But incompetence is no excuse or shield from due excoriation. That said, the girl herself was, despite whatever attention fixation she may have, was race-baiting. She should answer for that, whatever her mental defect.

the supposed black eye came from the made up attacker. it's really smeared makeup. can't you tell?i'm suprised she didn't get this backwards and put the makeup above her eye, since she carved the b on her face backwards. she is one sick woman.
