The Texas Engineering Extension Service or TEEX extended a helping hand. The agency donated over 10,000 toiletry items to Phoebe's Home, a local domestic violence shelter.
TEEX employees have been collecting the hotel-sized toiletry items for several months as part of the agency's Shining Stars Across Texas Program, a unique volunteer program TEEX manages in order to give back to the Brazos Valley and Texas. TEEX employees travel more than 2.6 million miles throughout the state each year delivering training and technical assistance. TEEX also provides training to all 50 states and more than 40 countries around the world.
"TEEXans have always been amazing in their community volunteer efforts," said TEEX Chief of Staff Laura Shehan, who coordinates the Shining Stars program. "Our employees have really gone above and beyond to find and deliver this many needed items."
Founded in 1978, Phoebe's Home is a 24/7 emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and their children. The organization offers free case management, counseling and educational sessions. Phoebe's Home can house up to 45 people and provides services throughout the Brazos Valley.
"What TEEX is doing is a godsend to Phoebe's Home," said Ron Crozier, the organization's director of communication. "The items (TEEX) is providing are things like soap and shampoo, which we give to everyone who comes through our doors. This kind of donation will save us countless dollars for other resources."
Phoebe's Home is an outreach program of Twin City Mission, a non profit organization that is funded by the United Way, Department of Human Services, Community Development Block Grant, ESGP, Criminal Justice Division Funding (Violence Against Women Act and Victims of Crime Act), various foundations and local support.
