Gov. Rick Perry and Comptroller Susan Combs said Wednesday the national economic crisis is beginning to affect state government, but said Texas is well positioned to weather the storm.

Perry said Texas is a leader in job creation and is one of the few states with a budget surplus, but he has already asked state agencies to limit their spending, and before meeting with business leaders Wednesday he said the economic slowdown could make it difficult to return surplus money to taxpayers and could mean state general revenue is needed to shore up pension funds.

“Texas has created a business friendly environment where 1,000 people a day move to our state to work and raise a family,” Perry said.

“With a turbulent national economy, we must continue working together with the private and public sectors to maintain our state’s competitive edge and ensure future prosperity.”

Combs noted that state sales tax revenue is not growing as fast as it was two years ago.

The Legislature meets in January.
