School Vouchers

A Republican contributor is taking his pro-school voucher message to the streets and airwaves.

It's an effort to allow state education dollars to be spent on private school tuition.

The Texans for School Choice political action committee is funding billboards and radio ads in Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston.

The spots will target low-income, inner-city parents.

The ads -- in Spanish and English -- carry the message "Give parents a choice. Give children a chance."

The group is funded by San Antonio (M) millionaire James Leininger.

Opponents say a school choice program would take money away from
Texas schools at a time when teachers are underpaid and lawmakers are struggling to fund the basics.

A plan to allow private school vouchers failed in 2005 Legislature, but Governor Rick Perry has predicted the issue will re-emerge.
