After weeks of speculation about the hit and run death of a Burton woman, Lee County Sheriff's officials think they found the driver. They didn't have to go far to get the suspect. He was already in jail in Washington County.
Tuesday, a murder warrant was issued for the arrest of Leon Gantt Patterson, 21. He is accused of getting behind the wheel of a truck belonging to Theresa Horne, 83, and running her over. It happened Thursday August 3. Her body was later found by an oil field worker off CR 140 in Lee County.
Investigators say Patterson was acquainted with Horne. They believe he did odd jobs on her property in Burton, but are still investigating.
The Lee County Sheriff's office, Washington County Sheriff's office and the Texas Rangers are all in on the investigation. At this time, they are not looking for any other suspects. The lead Detective on the case believes Patterson's murder charge will go before a Lee County Grand Jury in September or October.
Patterson was in the Washington County Jail charged with forgery of a financial instrument and theft.
