Bryan Mayor Mark Conlee presented the ninth annual Mayor’s Downtown Impact Awards during a volunteer reception Thursday evening at the Bryan Justice Center.
The Mayor’s Downtown Impact Award honors an extraordinary effort by an individual and/or organization to revitalize Historic Downtown. The award is sponsored by First National Bank of Bryan, which donates $500 to the Boys and Girls Club of Brazos Valley in the name of the award winner. The actual award is provided by The Discount Trophy Group.
This year’s recipients are Peter and Tara Madden, owners of Madden’s Casual Gourmet, and Shawn Andaya Pulliam and the Children’s Museum of the Brazos Valley.
The Maddens have operated their downtown restaurant for four years, and Andaya-Pulliam has served as executive director of the Children’s Museum for six years.
“We had a great pool of nominees to choose from and want to congratulate the winners on their commitment and contributions to downtown Bryan,” Conlee said.
Past recipients of the Mayor’s Downtown Impact Award include:
2007 – Papa Perez and Cindy Peaslee
2006 - Russell Bradley and Greta Watkins
2005 - John Hendry
2004 - Zane Anderson and Michael Schaefer
2003 - John Clanton and W.J. Bryan Partnership, LP
2002 - Caffe' Capri and Rami Cerone
2001 - EarthArt, Eric and Hazel Todd; Mrs. Edward (Pat) Hiler
2000 - Old Bryan Marketplace and Kay Conlee

The award is not given to the businesses with "seniority" nor the ones who have donated the largest sum of money. Rather, it goes to individuals and organizations who have enriched the downtown area and bryan as a whole. Look at the Childrens Museum. They provide free activities and special events constantly wich bring MORE business to the area. Their buildings have always been up to code and they are active in local government. Kudos to them.
Bryan business`s continue to shine while college station is dying a slow death. soon be nothing but bookstores and beer joints.
Very good point Fayrene. I agree with you. A business that's been open for 4 years to me just says that they just haven't seen the "hard times" yet. I think that the businesses that have been around for more than 10 years are the one's who are really helping Downtown Bryan. Is this something that goes on how much the businesses DONATE to the city or what? This is a legit question, because I really don't know, could anyone tell me?
